Travel Photo with a Tip: Drink Ginger Ale without Booze in It !

Surprisingly few people know about Ginger Ale.

For those travelers who are prone to motion sickness it can work wonders.

This morning I was racking my brain trying to think of something to post for my Canadian sweetheart over in Korea on that Travel Photo Thursday thing she always does.

When I ran across the street to get my morning iced-coffee fix, I spotted this can of

Canada Dry Ginger Ale in the soft drink display.

BINGO !

Ginger, is like the greatest motion sickness, natural, sea sickness, herb in the world.

Well, most travelers don't have time to grow their own.

And, it's pretty hard to find gingerbread cookies, any of the places I've been.

But, Ginger Ale can be found almost anywhere.

Just don't do what some of my friends do with it.  Leave the booze out and drink it straight.

There's no sense traveling around looking like a drunk sailor.

A recent trip to the island of Kudaka-jima, and watching some of the sad faces bouncing around on the ferry,  reminded me of this old home remedy.

So, I grabbed my backpack and shot this can for you and TRAVEL PHOTO THURSDAY.

Wikipedia needs help and if everybody donates Twenty-Five bucks that'd be great.

We can keep getting it FREE for another year that way.

I LOVE IT !

  1. That is a very handy tip Mike, we're cruising Galapagos in Jan so I'll have to stock up on the rum and green ginger wine and a wee bit of ginger ale!

  2. I've only ever come across Ginger Ale in the US. I don't think this is commonly available in Europe. But Canadian Dry Ginger Ale, I discovered in, of all places, the Philippines years ago.

  3. Easy Hiker,
Well, maybe we should start up a Demand Ginger Ale in Europe Facebook Fanpage to get the drink over there, too !

  5. Luckily, I never seem to get motion sickness, but my daughters do, so this is a useful tip. Ginger ale surely is better than pills...

  7. Sophie and Muza-chan,
Now, I'm hearing maybe, Ginger Ale isn't readily available over Europe way. But, I'll bet there's lots of Gingerbread cookies, even houses you can eat. That'd probably work, too !

  8. I remember trying ginger ale years ago, and it was ah-ight (as the corner boys now say).

  9. There is no ginger in ginger ale and you're just experiencing the placebo effect. Ginger pills or even better fresh ginger will help.

  10. FishHawk,
A'it, as a country boy would say.

    Nate,

  12. I drink a lot of ginger ale, too. But I never new it cures motion sickness. It does settle my stomach really well. Now that I think about it, this drink is probably why I never get motion "fever" on a plane - its because I always ask for ginger ale when they serve drinks. I learned something new today *smiling*

  14. Haha! I never even knew people drank it with booze :) Regarding Ginger Ale in Europe... I think Schweppes sells a version of it in Europe and Almdudler (from Austria I think) might not contain the same amount of ginger, but tastes similar.

  15. I love anything with ginger except the actual gingerale. Had the most amazing concoction about a month ago at the Banff Springs Hotel - fresh squeezed lemon juice, a mess of fresh crushed ginger, topped with soda water. I was in ginger heaven.

  16. I grew up drinking Canada Dry ginger ale whenever I had an upset stomach. I never thought about drinking it on the road though. Great tip!

  18. Good old Canada Dry ginger ale! You've made me homesick, Mike. I don't get sea sick, but it's good for any kind of an upset stomach. Nice backpack too!

  19. Nancie, Jade, Michael, Leigh and Sabrina, wow, hope I haven't missed anyone. Maybe we shouild come up with a concoction that's in powdered form, but fresh. Something you tote in your pack and mix with water. Ginger grows well in Korea, I think. Nancie, maybe you already have the stuff in fresh-powdered form and just don't recognize it !

  20. Haven't had ginger ale in ages, but not surprised that it would be good remedy for motion sickness. My mom would give me ginger ale when I was sick as a kid. Don't remember if it actually helped, but it tasted good!

  21. Cathy,
It's even better with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if you ask me !
