Travel Photo: Find the Map It Okinawa Dude

Thoroughly exhausted from today's travels with Map It Okinawa, here's a shot I took.

Old guys shouldn't be climbing mountains.

So, I hangout somewhere near sea level, normally, and let the younger guys climb.

Only today, I got a little bored and climbed a different mountain.

Mr. Map It Okinawa sent me a text message.

It said something like "Look up at the rocks and take my picture."

So, I shot a few dozen photos of him.

See the guy in the red shirt, down there ?

Then you found the Map It Okinawa Dude !

A Sea Kayaking Affair: You Ever Had One ?

Sea kayaking affair ?  Shucks.  Never heard of one, before.

But, I met these honeymoon people kayaking, one day and took their picture.

Now I'm learning a little bit about sea kayaking.

And, there is a big kayak affair happening in Okinawa, this month.

The folks sponsoring this event, called Guts 2012, have all the details.

They have an expert named James Manke, from Canada coming over to teach.

Just poking around on the Japan website, I watched some of the videos.

Those sea kayakers do some pretty wild stuff.

Like, they fool around in waves big enough to qualify as tsunamis !

The Greenlandstick Users' Trial Stages is one of the things everyone wants to qualify in.

The three day event takes place just a few miles up the road from my house.

It will happen November 23-25th so, I plan on checking it out.

Now, there's no way I'd try to challenge someone from Canada at using a stick made in Greenland.

But, we might do one of my favorite, redneck sports.

See who qualifies best at chugging Orion Beer.

See y'all soon sea kayakers !

Bird Portrait: Rock Thrush on the Rocks

Today, over on the island of Senaga Jima, this Rock Thrush posed for a second.

Over the past few days, we've been out shooting all over Okinawa.

And, on some of the outer islands accessible by car.

So, there are over a thousand photos of birds waiting in my (ahem-ahum) project bin.

Not to worry. Everything will get caught-up around here when the weather turns cold.

The sun is shining and I don't have to wear socks with my flip-flops.

So, like a farmer, I have to make hay while the sun shines.

If you don't hear from me tomorrow, that could mean I'm taking care of an itch.

Itchin' to hop on a boat and hit some far away island.

And, if anybody asks what I do for a living, I know what I'll tell them I do.

JUST LIVING !

Wildlife Photo: Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker

This photo of a Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker was taken today on Sesoko-Jima.

Dendrocopos kizuki is what the scientific community calls them.
