Waterfall Therapy

Only 92 Steps Away From Parking Area

There's only room for 2 or 3 vehicles to park and it's along a winding stretch of road.

Folks like to speed on this highway so, I wouldn't bring pets or wild and crazy kids.

Water cascading through the forest makes some soothing sounds.

Okinawan Folktale: Dividends of Kindness

river, trees, reflections

Peasant Mountaineer

A youngster climbed hills daily, in search of timber to be used for charcoal.

Since the passing of his father, he was the man of the household.

Demand for cooking fuel, provided income, to support his aging mother.

She, prepared a boxed lunch bundled up in a scarf, for him to carry every morning.

He would hang it on a branch of a tree, to keep ants from eating the meal.

One hot day, he decided to sit in the shade of the tree, to rest and relax.

Collecting firewood in the fresh air of the mountains, can be an enjoyable occupation.

Scents and sights in nature are a bonus, when you take time to sit and observe them.

Quite a few piles of firewood had been collected and bundled so, he decided to have a little picnic.

He smiled, stretched his sore muscles and, took off his shirt, spreading it over some pine needles.

It had been such a productive morning, he might get to go home early today.

When, he reached up to the branch his lunch had been tied to, something seemed strange.

It felt unusually light, as he lowered it to the ground. Soon, he'd know why.

Untying the knot, he opened the box of food and, it was empty. All his lunch was gone!

He shrugged and said, “Someone hungrier than, me must have taken the meal.”

Then, he got up and hurried, to finish his daily routine. And, never gave the food a second thought.

The next day was a repetition of the same events. No other humans were encountered.

All day the youngster was in the forest, never saw anyone yet, his noon meal would disappear.

Bring Two Lunches

Not to upset mother, the lad kept it a secret. No sense making her worry about him.

He just told her, they had plenty of food in the house and, his hard work made him hungry.

It would be nice if, he had two bundles of boxed lunches, to eat while working in the forest.

On the third day, he hiked up the mountain carrying two lunchtime meals.

Arriving at an area, he decided to harvest, he hung both meals on the branch of the same tree.

Noon arrived and, he discovered, all the food had been taken. He didn't get angry.

He simply said, “Whoever it is, must be awful hungry, to eat all those meals.”

Then, the youngster, went back to collecting wood out of the forest.

Out of the woods, came an elderly character with a lengthy white beard and, he had the meals.

I took them. To reward you for being a good hearted, charitable spirit, I'll do something for you.

Travel to Nanakijyai and, I will reward you with any three wishes, you may have.”

That sounded good but, the young chap, had no idea, where Nanakijyai might be.

The old man told him, it would be a three days and two nights trip, walking to get there.

He gave back all the meals, he had appropriated and, told the boy, to head south.

Each night, before sunset, he would find a house, where he could spend the evenings.

The Journey Began

The young boy, walked to the south and, at sunset found a home, where he was welcomed.

A beauty of a girl cooked him supper.

The homeowner asked, where the boy's travels would take him.

When he heard, Nanakijyai, he had a special request and, wanted the boy to help him.

His daughter, suddenly lost the ability to speak, a long time ago.

The man, told him that, the god of Nanakijyai, could remedy her problem.

The youngster promised, he would use one wish, to thank his gracious hosts.

The following night, having hiked south all day, the lad came upon another home.

He was given permission, to spend the night and, treated like royalty.

He thanked the family and, was prepared to continue his travels the next morning.

The man of the house, discovered where the youth was headed and, also had a request.

He was a well to do person, who had a tree, growing on his property.

It had failed to produce the colorful flowers, which usually blossomed, at this time of year.

He wanted to know, “Could the young man ask, the lord at Nanakijyai, how to fix that tree?”

The lad said, he would find out and, report back on his return trip.

Almost There

He had promised two of his three wishes as gratitude for others, helping him travel.

The unselfish lad, knew Nanakijyai, would be reached before sundown today.

Rounding a bend in the trail, he came upon a river. There was no bridge, to cross it.

The lad, couldn't swim. He looked up and down the river but, no boats were to be found.

He discovered a charming looking lady standing near the water's edge. She approached him.

When he told her, his destination was Nanakijyai, she became excited.

She said, “I'll take you there if, you can make a request, to the god, for me.”

She said she was a dragon, who crashed on earth and, couldn't reach the heavens anymore.

She took on the human form but, could transform, to fly the boy, the short distance.

If, he would ask the god of Nanakijyai, to restore her powers, she'd get him there.

His heart sunk. He would have to spend, his last wish, to help this dragon-lady.

It was the only way, he could get to Nanakijyai so, he agreed.

The woman transformed into a monstrous dragon and, flew him on her back, crossing the river.

Arriving, he walked a short way and, came upon the old man, who had been confiscating lunches.

The god, listened to the boy's three requests and, cracked a smile. He replied to the lad's favors:

1. The girl, who can't speak will regain that ability, after she meets a man suitable for marriage.

    1. Tell the guy, whose flowers won't bloom, to dig under the tree. There are two pots, one containing silver, the other, gold. If he gives, half of each, to another family, the tree will blossom.
    2. The dragon, who flew you here, is a greedy witch. She has two precious gems. If, she gives one, to someone else, she'll be able, to fly off this planet.

Those three wishes will be granted. Now git.”

The young man was saddened. He used all of his wishes, for others and, gotten nothing in return.

But, he was glad that, at least he brought happiness to other beings.

Return Trip

After recrossing the river, dragon-lady deposited the boy and became the woman, again.

He told her, what the god said, she needed to do, concerning the gems.

She gladly, gave one to the lad and, immediately became a dragon with, full powers.

After thanking the boy, she quickly flew off into the clouds, never to return to this planet.

Next in the circuit, he would spend the night at the home of the man with the tree problem.

The young guy, told the elder, what god had said about the pots, under the roots of the tree.

It was dark outside and had begun to rain. The homeowner decided to wait until morning.

There was no sense in rushing, to dig in the dark and, catch a cold in the chilly rain.

At dawn, they went out to begin digging. The earth had softened from the rainfall.

They carefully dug around the base of the tree and, discovered two earthen urns.

When the covers were removed, one was full of gold and the other contained silver.

Half the contents of each, were given to the boy and, the load would be heavy.

The grateful homeowner gladly gave the lad a horse, to take on his voyage home.

Arriving at the first home, he had visited days earlier, the family was anxiously awaiting his return.

The youth told the father, “When the girl meets her future husband, she will begin to speak.”

The lad was invited to dine, celebrate and spend another night but, he declined.

He wished to hurry home and share the story of his adventures with his mother.

They said goodbyes and the boy mounted the horse, to head on out the gate.

As he started to leave, the girl shouted, “Don't go. I want to marry you.”

The young man, married into the well to do family and, brought his mother, to live with them.

And, everybody lived happily.....

Getting Lost in the Hills of Kunigami

It's Getting to Be a Regular Routine

country road, one lane, guardrails, forest

About once a month the good Doc and I, get on these winding, one lane roads.

There are so many twists and turns, you would think, it was part of West Virginia.

And, there are plenty of intersections, to help you get confused, along the way.

smart-phone, Google Translate, no service, field, sign, Japanese

Sometimes, I pull out the smart-phone, to take a shot with Google Translate.

But, there are places, up in the mountains, where the gadget, won't work.

So, what I wind up doing is, shoot signs, with a real camera.

Then whenever, I get home, I can get my wife translator, to tell me where I've been !

Why Are Crows Such Nasty Birds ?

Answer Found in an Okinawan Folktale

crow, tree, GIF

Many years ago a hunter went up in the mountains of Miyako in search of food.

Armed with a bow and arrow, he wasn't having much success finding any game.

He spotted a beautiful golden bird but, didn't shoot it.

The bird, started speaking.

If the man would promise to not hunt  birds on this mountain again, he would be rewarded.

The golden bird would grant him any wish, he desired.

Back at home, he had a wife who was always complaining about the place they lived in.

So, the man requested a mansion for his wife.

Sure enough, when he got home, his wife was in their beautiful new home.

She said, a crew came and refurbished the whole place and she was surprised.

When the man told her it was because of the golden bird, she became angry.

She wished she could fly like a bird and, wanted that more than a fancy house.

The man felt like a fool but, went back to find the bird to make another request.

He thanked the bird for the new house.

But, he knew his complaining wife wouldn't stop until she had her wish granted.

She wanted to be able to fly.

The golden bird was a little ruffled over this request but, made an exception for this old man.

When he got home, his wife couldn't be found anywhere.

She had been turned into the ugliest bird the man had ever seen; a crow.

To this day, the people of Miyako have a saying about crows.

They say, "Look what another greedy person has been turned into."

But It's a Dandy !

Another day was spent in the northern mountains of Okinawa.

The mission was to find a special tree for the Then and Now photo series.

Things didn't turn out as expected but, this butterfly came along and made my day.

Staying High and Dry Waiting for Storms to Blow By

ocean,sky,island,mountains,bridge

View from Hills of Ogimi

There are a few little tropical storms brewing out over the ocean.

Nothing to panic about but, there will be plenty of rainfall the rest of this week.

We headed north this morning, to get out and soak up a bit of sunshine and fresh air.

It sprinkled rain, on and off, a few times but, there was sunshine, too.

When the temperatures and humidity hit the 90's, I don't mind getting rained on a bit.

At higher elevations, the breeze felt good, as long as there was some shade available.

Looking down at Shioya Bay, I decided to take advantage of the blue skies in this scene.

The Shioya bridge is in the lower third of the frame.

Out in the center, a little rain squall is passing through, dropping 100% humidity to earth.

This is a scene, I'd like to re-create, on a nice clear day.

For Those Concerned About the Storms

There's really no reason, to panic. It looks like Okinawa won't have a big typhoon.

Those, around the globe, interested in watching the weather, may follow these sites:

If you like Fahrenheit and miles per hour:  AccuWeather

For anyone using the metric system:  Japan Meterological Agency

Living in a tropical paradise, storms can be expected, sometimes.

It's a good idea to plan for the worst and hope for the best.

So, my plan consists of, going to get some candles, flashlight batteries and beer !

Cinnamon Tree -- Photos, Facts and History

cinnamon tree, forest

Think About It Next Time You Eat a Sticky Bun

Centered, in the photo above, is a cinnamon tree.

The reddish colored stuff, you see, is the tasty spice, flavoring your snack.

You have been eating, the bark of a tree.

cinnamon bark

There's a big chunk of the stuff, sitting on my desk.

It's a long story and, it's been awhile, since I've done one like that so, here ya go.

bark of cinnamon tree

Late in April of this year, I visited the Village of Oku, in northern Okinawa.

There is only one Mom and Pop-type store in town.

When I told the gal at he counter, I was hungry, she pointed across the street.

There are restaurants and soba houses over there.

That, I knew. But I told her, I didn't want to do the touristy thing.

She didn't have any bento box lunches or sandwiches.

So, I wound up buying a can of tuna and some Ritz Crackers.

Then, I sat outside at a picnic table and started munching away.

Along Came a Pickup Truck

These two guys got out and started carrying a log into the store.

They were surprised when I greeted them in local dialect.

Maybe, they thought, I looked like I was starving and felt sorry for me.

They stopped and one of them ripped a chunk of the log off and gave it to me.

"It's cinnamon," he said.

Then, off they went to deliver the log to the store.

The bark, has been on my desk, since that day in April because, I get busy.

This would be great blog material.

But, I had to go and get a photo of a cinnamon tree.  I had no idea what one looks like.

cinnamon tree

Suddenly It's June and Along Came Mr. Miyagi

He gladly showed us cinnamon trees, growing along the mountain roads.

To get there, we drove to ear-popping elevations.

It was like West Virginia, before they invented two way traffic.

cinammon leaf

We stopped along the single lane road a few times to look at the trees.

So, I took the opportunity to get some detailed shots of the leaves.

cinnamon leaves

The shape and patterns of the leaves help with identification.

The trees, we had seen, so far, may have been about ten meters tall.

Miyagi-san, wanted to show us the big ones, deeper in the jungle.

stream trekking

So, off we went, up the creek without a paddle.

Mr. Miyagi, led the way.

They should make river trekking an Olympic event. I'd bet on him.

mountain stream

In 15 minutes, he was about an hour ahead of me.

He came back down and found me, undecided, at a fork in the stream.

cinnamon tree trunk

When we got to this tree, he marked it with a knife.

It was growing right alongside the stream-bed.

The jungle was too thick, to see the treetop. So, I just shot this close-up.

I'd say, it was a couple of meters in diameter and 20 or more meters tall.

Farther upstream there are even bigger cinnamon trees, to see.

Mr. Miyagi was enthusiastic about showing me all of them.

Hey.  I might be an old goat but, I ain't exactly a mountain goat !

So, I told him, we better see what happened to Doc.

What if he took the left turn in the stream, instead of the right one ?

When, I tried to text  Doc, it didn't work.

Later, back at the car, Doc said he was trying to reach me via cell-phone.

There is no reception in those hills.  It's God's country. Or maybe, hell.

Cinnamon Has Been in Use for Centuries

In days of old, it was more valuable than silver or, gold

Somebody on Top Tropicals (dot) Com wrote a great story about the history of cinnamon.

There's no sense, repeating it here.

But, I did enjoy the part about the Pope, favoring Spain and Portugal.

They burned heretics but, England and France, didn't. LMAO !

Probably, you shouldn't say stuff like that nowadays.

Chinese Cinnamon, which we may have here, is also called Bastard Cinnamon.

We should tell the Pope and, see if he can get people, to stop the damn cussing.

Cinnamomum Zeylanicum, is what is considered the best for flavoring.

The above link discusses the differences between Real Cinnamon and others.

It might be a good idea, to find out what type cinnamon you have been eating.

Some sources, say there could be medical warnings associated with using Chinese Cinnamon.

The Greeks and Romans, had a myth about cinnamon.

They said, it came from birds, storing it in their nests and, Arabs stealing it from them.

Alexander the Great, helped bust that myth when he found some cinnamon trees.

Learn more about cinnamon at Natural Health Benefits

It's best, if you make the decision, yourself.

Should you be eating cinnamon, in those sticky buns ?

Maybe, you'd rather have yourself (like an Egyptian) embalmed with the stuff !

Travel Photo: Find the Map It Okinawa Dude

Thoroughly exhausted from today's travels with Map It Okinawa, here's a shot I took.

Old guys shouldn't be climbing mountains.

So, I hangout somewhere near sea level, normally, and let the younger guys climb.

Only today, I got a little bored and climbed a different mountain.

Mr. Map It Okinawa sent me a text message.

It said something like "Look up at the rocks and take my picture."

So, I shot a few dozen photos of him.

See the guy in the red shirt, down there ?

Then you found the Map It Okinawa Dude !

In the Mountains of Okinawa They Have Shiikuwasa !

Don't be alarmed.  There's nothing to worry about.  We're all safe.

Zooming in so you can see them a little better.

There ya go.  See, it's only some kind of fruit.

There's my thumbs up to let you know everything is OK and show how big they get.

They are pretty powerful little fruits.  I'd say a cross between a lime and lemon.

Shiikuwasa is called Citrus depressa by the scientific dudes.

If you Google Search the Cirtus depressa you can find out all kinds of stuff.

Some scientists say it can help you lose weight.

Some people mix the juice in their drinks.

Other people put it on their stinking fish.

I don't know about you but, I won't eat a stinky fish and I don't need to lose weight.

So, I guess I'll try some in a drink !

Photo of the Day from Sleepy Hollow Lake New York

Here is a photo of the day that you don't see me doing very often.

This was taken handheld with the Canon G12 at 6:26AM Apr 22, 2012

f/4.5  1/40  ISO 400 at a focal length of  30mm

The temperature was a blazing 40 degrees centigrade and I was wearing brand new flip flops.

My favorite niece picked me up at JFK International Airport yesterday and dropped me off in the

 Catskill Mountains.

Then, went and got her uncle some flip flops to make him feel at home.

Er else I would have shot those deer at Sleepy Hollow Lake barefooted.

The Lunar Eclipse Photo You Want Isn't Always The One You Get

Last night we were supposed to have one of those total eclipses of the moon.

That'd be the second one in a year.  The photo above was taken in Okinawa, Japan JUN 16, 2011.

We loaded up a car with all kinds of camera gear, way before sunset.

That way we'd find a good spot, up in the mountains for some clear shots.

The science people were saying the best views would be from the Asia Pacific Region.

That's where I live.

The weather looked sort of like this on the way up to the mountains.

That was my first clue that I wouldn't get the photos I was planning to get.

But,  island weather can take sudden turns and we had a few hours before the eclipse.

Things didn't turn out as we expected, though.

This is just a wild guess but, I'm thinking, if we'd have stayed a fifth hour in the mountains, this is sort of how the total eclipse of the moon would have looked from Okinawa, Japan.

About 9PM, after unloading all my camera gear from RyukyuRu's car, I was walking home and saw the moon peek through some clouds.

The man in the moon was probably thinking he'd see something like this.

Well, what if the dude in the moon was trying to catch a shot of us eclipsing down here ?

Maybe he got something like this.  Hah !

Better luck next time.....

Did anyone out there catch the DEC 2011 lunar ecplise photos they wanted ?

Butterfly in Blossom a Thursday Photo

Even on a cloudy day with an 80% chance of rain predicted you can find something on the mountains of Kunigami Okinawa, Japan to take a photo of in the wild.

After spending three days this week in the city of Naha it felt great getting out of town and up into the hills along the northwest coast.

Some crickets, a snake, a spider and this butterfly landing on a pink blossom were my targets today and I figured LadyE would probably like this shot best for her series of worldwide travel photography titled

TRAVEL PHOTO THURSDAY.

In just a minute, I'll be over there checking out all the other travelers' photography.

The Mountains and Ocean Are Calling Me (Photos)

This weekend an event that happens only once every two years takes place in Ada, a coastal village in the northeast area of Okinawa, Japan.  It's called the Shinugu Matsuri (Festival) but, there won't be any of the trappings you'd see at most festivals.  Here are a few photos from the event in August of 2009.

The mountains, ocean, and river play a role in this event and I will capture all I can from whichever angles the light suits me best.  I'll be putting the Panasonic, Pentax, and Canon through their paces.

There will be some high contrast photography in daylight and during the hours of darkness.

There will be gals, both young and old, dancing around fires for me to capture on digital film.

After a long, hard day humping all my camera gear up mountain trails and down to the ocean, I might just hand one of my cameras to someone else.  Then, have a sip of the local spirits and jump in on the last dance so, someone can snap a photo of watashi!  Reckon that'd be alright?
