Flower Photo: Maybe It's Christmas Aloe !

Blooming in December

 

 

They say there are about 500 types of this plant.

And, this is the first time I've photographed one with red flowers sprouting on it.

It's about 15 degrees Celsius (59F) outside and feels like freezing.

Whenever it gets colder than 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15.5C) we wear jackets.

This morning, I put socks on with the flip-flops.

A long sleeved T-shirt, flannel shirt and winter parka helped keep me warm.

Just in case, I placed some gloves in my pocket, too.

We were out in the wind and cold weather, looking for sacred trees today.

Luckily, I shot the aloe flower a few days ago, out in the sun.

The black background was just used to eliminate distractions from the scene.

The plant grows out behind my office.

If it keeps flowering in this frigid weather, I'm calling it Christmas Aloe  !

It doesn't take much of a green thumb to succeed in keeping this vegetation alive.

The photo was taken out behind my office and, we also grow the stuff at home.

It's great for treating cuts, bug bites or rashes and, I use it all the time.

Just hack off one of those stalks and, take as much gel from it as you need.

Then, wrap up the leftovers and keep them in the fridge for future use.

Some Folks Around Here Eat Aloe

It would probably be a good idea to wait and watch somebody else, eat it first.

Depending on the variety of plant, it may have you running to the toilet.

There are probably 500 different types of Aloe plant.

And, not all of them are safe to eat.

Occasionally, somebody comes around, offering aloe sashimi, to me when I'm at the bar.

Not feeling like taking any laxatives, I decline and keep drinking beer.

They have an Aloe and White Grape juice in the Coke machines and, I've tried some.

It's sort of sweet and pulpy but, safe to drink. 

For those who have access to Walmart, they have some Aloe products, you can buy.

So, I won't complain.

Blooming in Okinawa: The Aloe Vera Plants (Photos)

These aloe plants were spotted on Kouri-jima, Okinawa, Japan.

It was March 21, 2013 so, I guess these blossoms wait for Spring's official arrival.

We used to grow the stuff but, I can't remember ever seeing these yellow flowers.

If you get real close and look, the blossoms resemble miniature bananas.

 Unless you really know you aloe plants, you probably shouldn't eat them.
