Couple of Vegetables I Met Hanging Around Yesterday

They were Outside a Tent at a Festival

 

 

Someone had a produce stand near the entrance to the Azalea Festival.

They placed these two nudies out in the corner, to sort of, attract customers, I guess.

Vegetable artists like this are far and few between in this part of the country.

If, they'd make it an Olympic event, I bet lots of people would tryout for it.

That doesn't seem as dangerous or as boring as watching bobsleds, going down hills.

These characters, are known as daikon (giant radishes) in Japan.

Can you tell which one's supposed to be the female ?

To show appreciation for this fine art, I had to make sure the subjects got proper exposure.

That's probably because he knows the way I am.

These daikon (radishes) probably weren't the best, to display at the market.

But, they make great subjects for photography.

And, I do blogging stuff, too.

My cameras were back at the office.

So, I propped them up on the wife's chair, quick, before she washes them and chops them up.

And, shot the image with my cell-phone .

The thought, occurred to me, I should probably lug a DSLR home with me every night.

It may be too late to get another photo of these characters.

They might have already been cooked.

Many people around the world could eat a few radishes and not get full.

Today, I decided to introduce you to the radishes we have in Okinawa, Japan.

These little guys growing in a field gave me the idea.

The other Ryukyu Dudes were wading through a stream to find a cave.

Not thrilled about catching pneumonia, I told them I'd hang around and shoot birds.

No birds, butterflies or, any wildlife showed-up and I got bored.

So, I shot radishes. They are really called Daikon  (大根) in Japanese.

Paphanus sativus var. longipinnatus is what scientists would call them.

Rather than pull some poor farmer's longipinnatus plant out of the ground, to show you...

.....I went to the farmer's market and took some photos.

To add a sense of perspective, I stuck my paw in this photo.

Now, you have an idea how large these daikons can become.

They are humongous !

So far, I've never seen anyone eat, even half, of one of these radishes in one sitting.
