Photo Essay: The Twisted Umbrella at Manzamo

There is a Tropical Storm named Haikui hanging around Okinawa.

The darn thing isn't strong enough to be called a typhoon, so far.

So, RyukyuRusty and I decided to take a ride while the rain was stopped.

We went over to Manzamo and there were a few other people there, too.

The rain had quit but, the wind was blowing fairly hard.

Over the years, I bet I have had dozens of twisted umbrellas as the result of typhoons.

It would be nice if I could show everybody one, or maybe, a pile with ten of them.

But, the wife keeps throwing the things away on me.

Don't you think Twisted Umbrella sounds like a cool title ?

Today I got lucky.  There was a twisted umbrella right over the fence at the Elephant's Nose.

So, I grabbed it and got Rusty to do the shooting.

The wind got blowing again and helped me display the thing for you.

Excuse my hair. I try to keep it styled for tropical storms.

Things felt a lot safer when the gusts of wind slacked off.

But, I started yelling "Hurry up!" when the wind picked up again.

All I wanted to do was get back on the other side of the fence and get rid of that umbrella

before everyone watching started thinking I was crazy.

Hah.  I put the twisted thing right back where I found it.

That way other people could use it, if they wanted.

The opportunity to pose at a major tourist attraction with a twisted umbrella doesn't happen everyday.

We took a few parting shots and got back over to the other side of the island just in time.

That Tropical Storm, Haikui is dumping buckets of water on us again !

Photo of the Week: Good Reason to Take Diving Lessons

This photo was taken near Manzamo in Okinawa, Japan.

There is an underwater cave over in that pile of rocks.

Planning on going back over there when the light suits me better, I sort of put doing it on the back burner.

That was until I found an article about the huge underwater cave system nearby.

One of those Ryukyu Dudes I hang out with will have to take diving lessons.

That's because you won't find me going inside any underwater caves !

Crynoutloud We Shot This Chinese Gal and Her Friend (Photo)

It started off innocently enough.  We were at the Elephant's Nose Manzamo Okinawa, Japan waiting for sunset. Along comes this Chinese Gal and her friend and she asked me to take their picture.
Hey, I just noticed, that's her camera hanging from a strap attached to her right arm.  Well, I looked at the gadget and told her, in my best Japanese, "I don't know how to shoot these damn things.  I'm a professional cameraman.  Give it to him and see if he knows how to operate it." I pointed to Ryukyu Rusty.

Whoops!  She said, "I'm not Japanese.  I'm from Hong Kong."   She spoke flawless English.

Crynoutloud, it's a good thing I don't easily become embarrassed.  Or I would have.

Then, I got an idea.  I told her Rusty could shoot a professional photo of the couple with his Pentax and email it, as long as she trusted us with that kind of information.  Some folks don't.

Everything got done, by the book, names, email address, all the usual paperwork/legal stuff I do to make sure I never wind up in court over someone's photo.  Jail stinks.  Did you know that ?

Rusty got all the paperwork.  He fired away, click, click, click using a tripod and his shutter release cable.

Just in case he had a bad Pentax day, I shot this photo from a different angle.

They were really a nice couple.  I think the gal came back three times thanking us for shooting them.

Off they went.  Rusty emailed the photos we both shot.  They went to Hong Kong.  That's China, I think.

Well, all of a sudden, my analytics thing started telling me somebody called baidu keeps looking at my blog.  So, I Googled to see what a baidu could be.  I never heard the word anywhere before.

CRYNOUTLOUD BAIDU IS LIKE A HUMONGOUS SEARCH ENGINE IN CHINA !

Now, I'm wondering.  I know there's over a billion people in China who speak and read Chinese.

How many could there be who speak and read English, especially my kind of English ?

The other thing I'm wondering, no not, wondering, more like worried about is this email stuff.

WHAT IF RYUKYU RUSTY EMAILED THE PHOTOS WE SHOT OF THE CHINESE GAL AND HER FRIEND TO THE WRONG PEOPLE ?  CRYNOUTLOUD,  JAIL STINKS !

Photo of the Week: Sunset at the Elephant's Nose in Okinawa

This photo was taken last night at a tourist attraction called Manzamo in Okinawa, Japan.  We really don't have any elephants native to the Ryukyu Islands.  People with imaginations a whole lot sharper than mine call the rock formation in the left third of the frame, "The Elephant's Nose". Do you see the elephant ?
