A Sunny December Day and Plenty Got Done

red rock, blue skies, white clouds

Gimbaru Okinawa

Something, I saw at the Health Food Festival yesterday, made me go here.

This morning it was raining but, things turned out alright this afternoon.

When, I first got to the office, somebody on Facebook got me riled-up.

So, I turned the thing off, grabbed a camera and, went on a mission.

Some folks, wanted to know where they could buy Ryukyu Agu pork meats.

Other people, I'll call non-meat eaters, think, I'm an animal. I don't pick on them.

And, I don't go around, telling them, what they should or, shouldn't eat.

Poor li'l pig got killed for people, to eat. I can't recall, ever eating one alive.

Poor li'l carrots and strawberries probably, get sacrificed for vegetarians, too. So?

Kin Agu Is on the Way to that Red Rock

So, I figured it would be a good idea, to have lunch there and, do some research.

Snap a few photos, eat some healthy pork and do a Google review.

rice, salad, soup, pork burger, meal

There's what I had for lunch. A dead pig hamburger, some dead rice, salad and soup.

The meal came to a grand total of 800 yen, which is less than, ten bucks.

restaurant, tables, chairs

People like to see the inside of places and, find out how roomy they might be.

So, when all other customers, were gone, I got permission, to shoot the whole joint.

Japanese menu, pork

The menu is in Japanese and, nothing costs over 1,000 yen. That's cheap !

People who can't read Japanese, should learn or, bring along a friend, who does.

There's a freezer stocked with meats, you can buy, to take home and cook.

The Ryukyu Agu meat, isn't stocked in regular grocery stores. But, you can buy some here.

It was past 2 PM when I left this restaurant and, I had a long hike to go on.

pine trees, ocean, striated rocks

It would take a few hours, for me, to find these red rocks, along Okinawa's east coast.

If the ocean, wasn't visible, I'd swear someone, took these pictures in Arizona.

By the time, I got back into town, I was glad my office lights were still turned on.

At 6 PM, it gets mighty dark around here. The camera got downloaded and, I went to work.

Now, folks who want to eat Agu pork, can read my review and, get directions.

One of these days, I'll show vegetarians, where to get their food, too.

Friends and family, in my crowd, happen to be vegetarians, as well. I don't lecture them.

And, they probably know, there isn't much sense, in trying to reform me. I'm an animal.

Thank you.

The Ultimate Pork: Ryukyu Pig Named Agu

pig smoked and served in Okinawa

Served at a Health Festival

The annual Nuchigusui (health fair) was held in Kin Town today.

All sorts of, good for your health, items were on display including food and drinks.

They had health care specialists and, people who could give you massages.

Fruits, flowers, vegetables, tonics and special ingredients, to lift your spirits, were available, too.

The event most folks, come to see, is the butchering of the Maguro (tuna) and, they eat it.

A few hundred images of that, are in my pending files, to be seen some other day.

pork cooking on a charcoal grill, gif, flames

These little pigs called Agu (アグー) were a hot item today, as well.

Some were cooked in smokers, others, sliced and grilled over charcoal fires.

The Ryukyu pigs are special. Their pork contains less than 25% cholesterol.

Genetics wizards claim the hogs came from China, hundreds of years ago.

During the Battle of Okinawa, most of the livestock were destroyed.

Pigs from Western countries, were brought to the island so, people could survive.

Back during the 1980's someone, discovered Agu hogs, living in the wild up north.

Eighteen of them were determined to be pure bred; not, mongrels mixed with other breeds.

The little black pigs, called Shimabuta (locally) are making a comeback.

The pork is tender and sweeter than, the average hogs farmers are raising.

So, with the demand for healthy foods, on the increase Agu meat has become popular.

Close-up: Wild Boar of Okinawa -- The Ryukyuinoshishi

captive, wild boar

Domesticated Pigs Came from Wild Boars

These pigs are known as Sus scrofa in the scientific community.

Each time, I stop by the Higashi Village Museum, I pay this guy a visit.

We grunt at each other a few times and when I get a smile, I snap the shutter on my camera.

When It Rains in Okinawa -- Go Eat Pigs !

Tropical Islands Can Be Tricky

The sun was shining as we left Kin Town for Ginoza this morning.

Just like any other island in the world, the weather can make sudden changes.

The remnants of a tree photo, was taken before it really started pouring down.

Pentax camera, tripod mounted, in rain

The Pentax K3, didn't mind getting wet.  But, I do.

We decided, cave hunting, could wait for another day and ended up here.

Tonga Burger, made of pork, restaurant
This is where the Village of Ginoza has everybody beat.

When you go to this Tonga place and order a burger, it's authentic.

How do people get away with calling things hamburgers, when they are made of beef ?

A Tonga Burger is made of pork.

takeout meals, pork

Today, I decided to try this Bu-Tan's meals, run by the same folks as Tonga.

display, classic car and surfing pig

After I placed my order, I noticed this little display and, had to shoot it.

pork cutlet, tray, soup, salad, rice

Pork cutlet, soup, salad and rice was just what I needed.

Everything was delicious so I told the gal cooking, this is a Five Star Restaurant.

pink pig mobile, Tonga Moblie, pork

Just before we departed, this pink Tonga-mobile showed up.

Too bad, I didn't snap some photos while the engine was still running.

It has a curly pig tail that wiggles on the back end.

Wouldn't you love a machine like that ?

The next time I see this beauty, I'll have them leave the engine running.

The Auto Awesome folks could do something like this butterfly thing they made for me.
