Travel Photo: Rock Will Tell You If It's a Boy or Girl

Inside a cave, Special stone, marker, Japanese

Niya-thiya Cave or Senin Gama

The cavern is located on Ie Island, Okinawa, Japan and, it has historical significance.

A thousand islanders took shelter here and, survived the Battle of Okinawa.

In the right lower corner of this image, is a stone of hysterical significance, to me anyway.

Call it the Pregnancy Rock if, you like. Here's what the inscription teaches us.

Pick up that stone, chained to the short pillar and, see how much it strains your muscles.

If  a woman, lifts the stone before long, she'll become pregnant.

The stone heavy ?  That means, the baby will be a boy.

If, it's light, a baby girl will be born.

Photo and a Question: What is an Island ?

This photo was taken today, on the northeast coast of Okinawa, Japan.

There's way too much information on the world wide web.

Some folks say an these things have to be at least two acres in size, to be considered an island .

Otherwise, they are just a rock.

Well, this baby has a bunch of rocks around it.

It isn't even close to two acres but, it's a chunk of land surrounded by the ocean.

So, it looks like an island, to me.

It's way past midnight and there won't be any more research coming out of this office, tonight.

Over at Fun and Interesting Facts About Islands it

says they have "Tasty Food To Feed The Curious Mind".

So, if you're hungry for more information on islands, I recommend you go there.

If you want to holler back at me, go ahead.

What do you think an island is ?

The Pregnancy Rock in Okinawa (Photo) It's a Myth I Hope

In this photo the big granite block has inscriptions in Japanese telling you about the round stone chained to a pedestal on the right.  It says that if a woman lifts the stone she'll soon be pregnant.

If the stone feels heavy, it'll be a baby boy.  If it's not heavy, the baby will be a girl.  Three of us were in this cave on Ie Shima, the Island we visited in Okinawa for the Easter Lily Festival back in April 2011.

There was myself, Ryukyu Rusty and his girl.  We tried to get a photo of her picking up the rock, just for a joke, because she does have these, um, SHAPLEY ARMS but, it was like "No way, Dudes".

So, I picked the thing up just for the heck of it.  It doesn't make your pants fall down, or anything like that.

Just, it seems kinda funny.  I've been having a lot of cravings for chocolate, lately.

That pregnacy rock thing, I hope it's just a myth.  I've checked everywhere, even FORBES MAGAZINE and they don't say anything about picking up rocks getting people pregnant !

Wildlife Photography: Tip #5

Tip #5. Steady the Shot with Whatever’s Available.

Even the few times I hump around a tripod with all my camera gear there have been shots I’d have missed if I didn’t rip the camera off the tripod and improvise, quickly. Critters just don’t wait for you to get the camera positioned for the best shot, so you have to think fast and move to the where the lighting suits your needs. There may be no time, no room, or no use for a tripod and if you try it, you may have missed the shot. That’s where a tree, fencepost, rock, roof of a car or sitting down and resting your elbows on your knees may come in handy.

The bird above is a Japanese White Eye visiting Cherry Blossoms on 19JAN2009 12:11PM f/8 1/640 ISO 100 Photo taken using a chain link fence to steady the shot. Pentax K10D Sigma 50-500 Focal Length 500mm.

It's Friday. That means I'll be out all weekend shooting festivals. I'll try and have something new to make you want to live in Okinawa, first thing next week. Until then, HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND !

Cheers,
Mike
