Many Disasters Worse Than Titanic Occurred at Sea

 

This is a book sent to me by the author, David L. Williams.

There won't be a Mad Mike Review for a few reasons. One being, I'm still reading.

Another reason, one of my photos was published in it and I like to be impartial.

It's pretty tough doing an unbiased review when the author sends you an autographed copy.

But, I will tell you, reading this, is educational and it is a true, horror story.

In more than 40 other disasters at sea the number of casualties exceeded those of the Titanic's.

 Who would have ever known ?

People are Standing in Line

All my Ryukyu friends are waiting for me to finish reading this book.

And, I told Mr. Williams, I'd try to read a chapter a day.

But, I'm a slow reader.  Every time I finish reading, I hide the book, somewhere.

Sometimes it's at home.  Sometimes it's in my office.

It took a half hour to find it today, stashed away in my backpack.

Hey !

  If you had an autographed book would you let it get exposed to Grand-kids or Ryukyu Dudes ?

Me neither.

Everybody should just go to The History Press and get their own books.

That's what I recommend.

The day started off with an email from Yahoo. My latest article is online:

Then, after I took a short break going through the 30, or so daily Junk emails where I'm always

winning lotteries in foreign countries, getting offers from girls who can't spell Facebook and 

Canadian doctors who want to enlarge me, I get back to work.

Do you spend three hours a day answering all those people ?

It's got me thinking, I could just be wasting of my time.

So, for now, I think I'll just forward them to some other country's leader.  Hah !

The Judges at Better Photo made this a Contest Finalist.

Unfortunately, I don't post the high-resolution photos they see, here.

There are people (ahem-ahum) who like to borrow stuff like that without paying.

One of these days I'll do a Photography Tip to show you how to protect your photos.

 As if there wasn't enough excitement around here for me today, along came another email.

Somebody in the United Kingdom saw this photo and wants to publish it in a book.

Well, the stuff I post online isn't fit for publishing on paper.

So, I dug up a few different versions of this Tsushima Maru model.

I made them high-resolution.

And, off to the book printer they went.

Now, I'm done for the day.

As long as Mrs. RyukyuMike doesn't go out lookin' for me and find me here's the plan:

Find an air-conditioned bar with dim girls, pretty lights and cold beer.

Er, pretty girls and dim lights, I meant.

Sinking the Tsushima Maru (対馬丸) A Sad Day in History 1944

This is a short photo essay from the shortest museum visit I've ever made.

The Tsushima Maru (対馬丸) Museum is located in Naha City Okinawa, Japan.

The walls are lined with black and white photos of Okinawan school children.

They were being evacuated from the island on a passenger-cargo ship because the Japanese expected an American assault on the Ryukyu Islands in the near future.

The 826 children were probably asleep in their bunks

when the Tsushima Maru (対馬丸) went down in flames.  It was August 22, 1944.

As I took this photo, depicting a survivor on a raft, an elderly woman behind me was crying.

Only 59 students from that ship survived.

She may have been one of them.

I left the museum.
