Scene from Abushibare - Cultural Ritual in Yaka, Kin, Okinawa
Noro Prepares for Prayers on a Beach
Abushibare is a springtime ritual held in some locations throughout the Ryukyu Islands.
Like many special events held in Okinawa, this one coincided with the full moon.
Up and around with the camera for some moon photography, yesterday was a long, hard day.
By the time I finished taking photos of the setting moon, I had to hurry to this event.
It was about a two-hour hike for me and, I happened to be the first one on the beach.
Several times I have witnessed the rituals performed at a small shrine.
That part, I skipped in order to catch my breath and rest in the shade adjoining the beach.

Culture Photo: An Okinawa Priestess
This morning we attended an event known as Abushibare. Here's a favorite photo.
The Priestess, also known as a Noro, had finished prayers and offerings at a shrine.
Here, she is walking towards the shoreline, where more rituals will be performed.
With the possibility of the full moon, peeking through the cloudy skies, I'm in a rush.
So, the other 150 images taken today, will be waiting in the pending files.
That way, batteries get charged and, I'll do some recharging in my sleeping bag.

2016 Abushibare (畦払い) A Favorite Photo
Everyone Praying
This photo was taken at 10:16AM on the beach at Yaka, Kin Town, Okinawa, Japan.
It's a favorite, out of 150 images taken today because, I was fortunate enough, to get that close.
There were plenty of other photographers and note takers at this cultural event.
Sometimes, the crowd of reporters and photographers, outnumbers the worshipers at an event.
That was probably, true today but, everyone acted professionally and, I'm glad they did.
Each of us, took turns, allowing others, to get in close, to do their work.
It's been a long day and, I'm still waiting, to find out if the full moon will appear tonight.
Many other images, will have to be processed, at a later date.

Photo of the Week: Celebrating Kajimaya
In Okinawa When You Turn 97 -- It's Time for a Party !
Pictured above are Ito Tomoyoshi and Yamashiro Katsu.
Last Sunday, in the Yaka District of Kin Town, festivities were held in their honor.
They only have to wait three more years.
Then, when they get to be 100, the Prime Minister of Japan sends them a letter.
They will probably be the youngest centenarians in town !

Photo of the Week: Before Rice Krispies®
Before making Rice Krispies®, it's always best to krispify the rice.
I think that's what they were trying to do in Yaka Okinawa, Japan yesterday.
This photo was taken to show part of the process.
There's probably a lot more that you don't know about it.
