An Unexpected Discovery Down in the Mangroves

mangrove trees, reflection,river

Visiting this forest with the sun setting, gives you some terrific reflections.

Usually, I time my walk to be alongside the river during high tide.

When there aren't any interesting wide angle scenes, I do some close-up photography.

That's just to show some of the textures the mangrove provides.

When the tide goes out, the mangrove roots are exposed.

Once in awhile, I visit during low tide, to get deeper into the forest.

bark of mangrove, tree, moss

This was a great time to capture moss, growing on the shady side of a tree.

There's a myth about the stuff growing on the north side of trees.

But, that depends on what part of the world you happen to get lost in.

Read Outdoor Life for more on the subject of survival.

television, discarded, trash, mangrove forest

This little surprise has me concerned about survival of the critters in the mangroves.

It could impact the survival of travel and tourism in the mangrove forest, as well.

It looks like someone couldn't afford the recycle fee for their busted television.

So, they decided to throw it away, in the mangroves.

Something needs to be done, to prevent things like this from happening.

If people continue to throw their trash in the forest it'll start looking like Tomigusuku

Who would pay for an Eco-tour, where you visit a landfill ?

Looking online for some solutions, I sort of like the Singapore solution.

Down that way, a person could get their fanny paddled, for doing stupid stuff like this.

Take a look at some of the punishments Singapore deals out to their criminals.

Then, tell me those kinds of laws wouldn't come in handy, around here !

Significance of the Okinawa Sailing Sabani Trophy

The Cup Awarded to the Winning Team

This photo was taken last June at the end of the Zamami to Okinawa Sailing Sabani Race.

The sun was setting behind me and I was wrestling with glare, trying to take the shot.

"Sir Peter Blake Memorial" is inscribed on the plaque.

A recent invitation to attend the race, again this year prompted me to do some research.

Everyone knows Peter Blake was from New Zealand and won the America's Cup for sailing.

But, I didn't realize the significance of this trophy, until today.

He began sailing when he was five years old.

In his lifetime, he probably, broke more sailing records than anyone in the history of the world.

That includes, sailing completely, around the world.

They just don't make sailors like Sir Peter Blake, anymore.

Why There's a Memorial

In December of 2001, he was shot dead by pirates, in Brazil.

The criminals got caught and went to jail but, I think we should let them out.

That would only be on one condition.

They would have to volunteer to let someone take them out in the ocean.

AND, FEED THEM TO THE SHARKS !

What's Wrong With That Picture ? (Photo) Lame Duck and the Nun

Not Trying to be Overly Political or Religious

Here's a photo of a real-live lame duck taken in Okinawa, Japan.

Before I start shooting wildlife, I survey the background to make sure there are no distractions.

I make sure there are no dump trucks, washing machines or loose gorillas running around.

When the eyeball is peeking through the viewfinder, all I see is the bird's eye.

The camera is on spot-focus.

There is nothing else that matters to me.  Just keep focus, dead center on the bird's eye.

Focus, move with the bird and keep adjusting exposure settings.

For all I know, the bird could be showing hooves, claws or be wearing a wedding band.

All I am looking at is the eye; dead-center in the eye.

So, I never knew I was shooting a lame duck, until Doc Graff mentioned it.

A couple of dozen shots of this bird with a crippled foot got thrown away.

Nobody wants a photo of a lame duck.

That's what's wrong with this picture.

Checkout the Picture of this 83 Year Old Nun

She got convicted of busting into a government nuclear compound.

Depending upon who you listen to, she could be locked away for 20-30 years.

It's as if she was some sort of threat to national security.

Makes you wonder who guards those sorts of things. The gal doesn't look like a ninja, to me.

There's probably, not a terrorist bone in her body.

Instead of making her rot in jail they should just send her to Rome.

Maybe, the Pope could spank her or, something.

Take a look.  And let me know.  What's wrong with that picture ?
