Photos of Cicida (Tanna japonensis) Semi (セミ ) in Japan

Heard Mostly on Hot and Humid Days

When the thermometer is almost busting and it's near 98% humidity you'll hear them.

This morning, I woke up late. The sun was already shining.

The wife was in the kitchen and I asked her if it was raining outside.

My hearing isn't all that great. It sounded like it was raining.

The noise, was coming from the cicida bugs, she said.

insect, cicida, bug

Out behind the office, I spotted this one on a trellis.

Usually, they are hiding in trees and hard to photograph so, I grabbed a camera.

Lots of people hate these bugs because they are so noisy.

Kids, in Japan love them probably,  because the sounds remind them of Summer Vacation.

If you catch one, while it's making all the noise, it's sort of cool.

They buzz and wiggle, tickling the palm of your hand. Kids enjoy stuff like that.

It's fun to stuff one down the back of someone's shirt, too.

cicida, motion GIF

This one wasn't making any noise.

It flew from the trellis over to a plant in the shade.

So, I was able to get a dozen quick photos and have this motion GIF made.

Searching for some decent YouTube sounds of the bug didn't pan-out, too well.

It would have been nice, to give you some of the sounds they make.

But, I found something, even better.

An easy way to remember the Japanese name for the bug is here in this video.

Just leave off the "Say You" part and say, "Say Me."

Lionel Richie got his audience to do it !

Okukuubi River Rocks and Red Dragonfly in a Motion GIF

Crimson Marsh Glider, GIF, Dragonfly, river, rocks

Early morning on July, 3, 2014, I had a plan.

Up at 4:30AM, I walked the dogs before sunrise and was on the road with a camera by six.

The idea, was to get some wide angle photos of the Kin Bridge and Dam in early sunlight.

All that was done by eight o'clock and it was time to goof off, after that.

Off came the wide angle lens and the Sigma 50-500mm, replaced it.

This Crimson Marsh Glider kept landing on the same rock.

So, I locked the camera in position on the tripod.

And, fired away, to get you this GIF.

Mongooses or Mongeese ?

Check These Varmints Out

When you spot one of these Mongoose critters, it is usually by itself.

And, they normally disappear quickly.

pair of Mongooses, running up a wall

These two were captured digitally, along the bank of the Okukubi river.

Just guessing, I'd say, it was probably a mother and son.

A split second earlier, I saw the number two mongoose, slip and fall into the river.

That's when, I decided, it might be a good idea, to shoot them.

Motion GIF,mongooses scaling a wall,Okinawa

The first mongoose turned around and, made sure the little one got to the top of the wall.

Only a mother, would do something like that.

A father wouldn't have bothered to wait, because that's just the way dudes are.

When you're running for your life, it's supposed to be...

EVERYMAN FOR HIMSELF!

Research on the Mongoose in Okinawa

There are plenty of photos and links on these critters in my files, already.

And, I blogged about encounters with this invasive species, in the past.

It's always a good idea, to see if anything has been written about them recently.

That's how I came across a few items, I had never known about the mongoose.

The professor who introduced these weasel-looking things to Okinawa:

Shozaburo Watase

He came up with the original brainstorm of bringing the mongoose to the Ryukyu Islands.

That was because he saw a mongoose and snake fight, in a cage.

And, the mongoose won.

He had 17 mongooses brought to Okinawa in 1910.

The plan was to use the animals for getting rid of the poisonous habu snakes.

Being natural enemies, the mongoose would kill all the snakes.

Biological pesticide is what they called it.

Only, DUH Professor didn't exactly take his research far enough.

The mongoose, in nature, is a daylight sort of critter.

The habu is active at night.

The original population of 17 mongooses, expanded to something like 30,000.

And, they go around eating things like the endangered Yanbaru Kuina.

Time for a Quote

From an excellent article concerning the mongoose problem we have this:

"Ten years after the release of the mongoose in Okinawa, one agricultural officer, Kyukichi Kishida, published a cautionary essay in an academic journal, saying that mongoose might not be a perfect solution for Okinawa, citing the case of mongoose being introduced in the West Indies to hunt rats but also eating poultry. Later, he rescinded his article with the deepest apology, says Ogura. "This can explain the dominating of the environment of academic circles back then, he adds."

Now, I've heard of government coverups and some corporate ones, as well.

Academics, can do that kinda stuff, too?

 Mongoose in a Birdcage

A good old grandpa, in Ginowan caught a mongoose and kept it in a cage.

The darn things were eating his chickens' eggs.

His grandson likes the furry animals so, gramps kept it alive for the kid.

What a nice guy.

But, one night, he got a surprise.

A habu snake came into his house and decided to swallow the mongoose.

Grandpa came along and made the snake, puke the mongoose loose.

Don't you just love happy endings?

This was brought to you by the Ryukyu Shimpo.

Mongoose and Snake Fights

The used to have these demonstrations at tourist attractions.

A few years ago, they were banned.

The snakes' rights movement or, animal activists had the entertainment put to an end.

From a friend, Tom Corrao, a video of what takes place these days:

To Pluralize the Word Mongoose

Mongooses, sounds correct, to me.

But, I went and did a search, just to be sure and, got this surprise.

Merriam-Webster, also, an Encyclopedia Britannica Company says:

Mongoose, noun

Pluralmongooses     Also,  mongeese

Here's what I think:  We should eradicate all the mongeese in the Okinawa Islands.

The July 2014 Full Moon Is Being Called a Supermoon !

First a Motion Gif

The moon peeked out from behind the clouds briefly last night.

Just when, I was ready to leave the office, I spotted it.

So, I ran back inside and grabbed the Pentax K3, Sigma 50-500mm lens and a tripod.

Sitting on the front steps, here's what I saw.

motion GIF, full moon

The photos, used to create this GIF, are un-cropped.

That's the size of the moon, I see, looking through my camera's viewfinder.

Normally, I wouldn't save photos with clouds blowing by the moon.

What I was doing, is playing around with the exposure settings.

That way, if and when, the clouds blew away, I'd be ready.

Close-up, supermoon

Ready, to shoot that sucker, when in was in the clear !

Moon Stuff Is a Bit Confusing

The whole Full Moon schedule, fools me.

After shooting 25 photos of the moon last night, I posted on on my Facebook Page.

And, I told everyone, to standby, because I thought the full moon was coming tonight.

Then, I left my office for the second time and went to a watering hole.

This gal, I call, Eri My Love So Sweet, was there.

When I told her, this month's full moon is on the 12th of July, she said, "Uh-uh."

According to the Lunar Calendar, it's on the 15th day of the sixth month.

We got a Chinese Calendar and, checked.

Sonovagun, if the full moon wasn't July 11, 2014, which happened to be, last night !

So, I'm calling this, the July 2014 Full Moon.

One thing, you don't want to do, is start an argument with those Chinese guys.

They practically live next door to Okinawa.

And, there are gazillions of them who may be looking for a fight.

For the Rest of the World's Moon Gazers

Go ahead and call the 12th of July 2014 Your Full Moon Night.

The Thunder Moon, Hay Moon and Full Buck Moon are names you could also, use.

They say, it is one of three supermoons appearing during 2014.

That, is according to the Earthsky Org.

If, you like dingbat sort of stuff, Mystic Mama will teach you about the July 2014 full moon.

And, over at Moon Giant, you can see the full moon dates, all the way through 2016.

Grab yourself a camera or, a lover and, check it out tonight.

Staying in line with the Confucius way of thinking, I already gotterdun !

Scenes from Zamami Island 2014 Sailing Sabani Race

Motion GIFs of the Boats in Action

This year, the course was changed due to rough sea conditions.

Instead of sailing from Zamami Island to Naha, Okinawa the race was held in the Keramas.

The sea was relatively calm, close to the islands.

It was a beautiful, sunny day.

For awhile, it had me wondering. Why not sail to Naha ?

As you probably noticed, I'm bouncing around on a fishing boat.

Each team had an escort boat, somewhere nearby, for safety.

Peeking through a camera viewfinder, I'm busy, looking for the Umimaru team.

With 30-40 boats racing, it would take some time to find them.

I take advantage of he light to shoot different types of the traditional wooden boats.

A few, had outriggers and some had, two sails.

The weather, seemed perfect, to me.

And, I was a little bit disappointed, that the race to Okinawa was cancelled.

Leaving the Kerama Islands

We rode a commercial fishing boat back to Naha, Okinawa.

Just a few minutes away from Zamami Island, I learned, why the race was cancelled.

The swells, in the ocean, made waves a few meters high.

They would have swallowed any one of the sailing sabani boats.

A few times, I thought our boat was going to capsize.

But, we had a captain who knew how to handle the seas and, I thanked him for the ride.

BONUS: FOR THOSE WHO FOLLOWED THIS FAR

On the ferry, going to Zamami Jima some gals, asked the age of this old cameraman.

So, one of the sabani dudes told them.

"Mike, he's a Super Grandpa, about 90 years old or, so."

HAH !

I won't be 90 for another 13 birthdays or, so.

Okinawa.  I couldn't think of any place, on earth, I'd rather live.

Just a Good Old Wooden Sabani and Crew Sailing

Temporarily Offline

The WI-Fi connection, I was assured would be available, is up and running, now.

All is well on the island of Zamami Jima.

The past few days were mostly sunny and, I hope the weatherman keeps guessing wrong.

The 15th Annual Sabani Sailing Race starts tomorrow.

Here's a motion GIF of the Umimaru crew, paddling and hoisting the sail.

If the weather keeps doing, as it has been, this crew, might make it to Naha in under four hours.

Even if they don't, we'll probably go out and celebrate tomorrow night, anyway !

Wildlife Photo: A Kingfisher Motion GIF

bird, Kingfisher, Motion GIF

Captured with a Pentax K3 and Sigma 50-500

The lens was stretched all the way out to 500mm and, I was too far away to hear the bird.

Maybe, I should have taken better care of my ears when I was younger.

It would be nice to know if that bird was doing some sort of mating ritual.

Or, do you suppose, he was just singing for his supper ?

Before getting started, there are a few things, you might want to try.

The Auto Awesomenator needs a good series of photos to work with.

Use a tripod or, be sure to steady the camera by some other means.

Five or more photos are needed to create the GIF.

Set your camera to burst or, continuous shooting mode and, fire away.

Identify and prepare the series of images and place them on your computer desktop.

Ten Easy Steps to Get a Motion GIF

Bird Photo: Friday Night and Here's a Dam Heron for You

bird,dam,heron,Striated Heron

It was near the Kin Dam so, I'm calling it a dam heron.

Striated Heron is the common name of this bird.

bird, Motion GIF,Striated Heron,dam,SD card

There were so many shots of this bird taken, the SD card got filled up.

And, I didn't bring along a spare so, I cussed and went home.

But, if one of these photos wins a contest....

I'll start calling the bird a dam fine heron.

Friday night, a beer is calling me.

Have a great weekend !

Hungry Cattle Egret Gets the Worms Everytime

There Wasn't Anything to Do Outside Today

So, last year's photo files were looked at again.

Finding a pile of images undeveloped from March 2013 I went to work.

Action Photo, Egret searches for food

Don't let this photo fool you.  There's only one bird in the picture.

When you upload five or more similar scenes into Google+ they do this for you.

White Egret, Motion GIF

Auto Awesome creates a Motion GIF.

Bird, Egret, Motion GIF

So, I throw a bunch of pictures, like this, in there.

And, go out for a cup of coffee.

By the time I get back in the office, the work is all done.

And, the egret gets to eat the worm !
