Last Conversation with Apple's Siri

It was a Beautiful Day

The sweltering summer heat and humidity, sort of, got blown away.

There hasn't been a better day, in the month of September, to go for a long hike.

A quick check of emails and, I'd be out the door with the cameras.

Beeps and bings, started going off on the computer and charging iPhone.

Some sort of update, needed to be installed, the iTunes told me.

After going through all kind of frustration, even fingerprinting, I was all set.

Push the Start Button and Here Comes Siri

A long time ago, I got rid of that useless witch but, the update brought her  back.

Every time, I turned the phone on, I couldn't get my home screen to show.

Siri, would turn herself on and, ask the same stupid question. What can I help you with ?

First I asked, "How can I get Siri off my iPhone?"

She said, "I can't help you with that."

Apple Should Get Rid of Siri

People who want to impress themselves with, talking to robots, can buy phones elsewhere.

They want to act like some kind of astronauts or something. Join NASA.

Regular earthlings, like me, don't need stupid robots, to talk to.

Almost a whole day was wasted, trying to get my phone, working again.

Finally, I caved and played Siri's stupid game because, there was nothing left to do.

I explained to her, the update made my usual iPhone home screen disappear.

The witch goes, "That's an interesting question Michael."

And, she never came back with a solution. Just left me hanging, smoking and cussing.

Finally, I went and Googled "How to turn off Siri."

Got rid of her and,  learned some new stuff along the way.

Triple clicking, rebooting and punching the phone around the office, it began working again.

Since Apple got my fingerprint, I figured I'd better not cuss at Siri.

So, I toned it down a bit and, sent her my last message. I really wish her a fertile future !

End of rant

Drivel Can Get Annoying on Facebook

screenshot from Google Search, meaning of drivel

It May Hurt Someone's Feelings

The "Like and Share" -- "Copy and Paste" Facebook hooligans did it again.

Each morning, I check the iPhone before, heading off to work, on a real computer.

It's nice, to get rid of all the junk mail and, peek at Facebook activity, while still at home.

There are Friends, photographers, writers and business associates, in my Facebook feed.

We share things, that may be of interest to other friends of ours. That's cool.

And, I'm sure, we all get our fair share of things, that ain't so interesting.

I might hit the "Like" button because, somebody taped their kid's picture on the fridge.

But, won't share it on my Timeline for everyone else, to see.

Like stuff, don't Like it; so far, we still have freedom of choices. And, that's cool, too.

Some, "Drivel" gets sent around, with your name tagged or via Facebook Messenger.

These days, it's hard to tell if, it really came from your friend or, a hacker.

Matter of fact, it could even be some Facebook marketing study, generating the drivel.

Human beings, have enough brains to Like or Share, whatever they want to.

If, they don't like something they probably, won't share it. Know what I mean ?

Robots can probably be programed, to do those sorts of things.

For Any Robot Friends Out There

Things that go around on Facebook labeled, Like and Share + Copy and Paste:

If, you have a son, daughter, grandchild, pet, you love with all your heart

If, you had a dog, cat or parakeet with an underarm rash

If, you know someone who is a nurse, teacher, doctor or, in the military

If, someone or, something you loved, died and went to heaven

If, you know a cancer victim or, someone with a fever

If, you agree or disagree with some political bullcrap, happening in some part of the world

If, everything should be free and nobody, should have to pay taxes

This Could Go On and On Indefinitely

Instead, I'll cut it short.  Just remember, it has to be something emotional, tear-jerking.

The subject must be something, that grabs your attention for action.

Not really, a cold-blooded, heartless individual, I'm part human, too.

Should Facebook, ever decide, to let me filter out "Like/Share/Copy/Paste, I'd do it.

The Drivel pisses me off and sometimes, ruins my day.

Any Friends who, would like to Unfriend me because of this rant. Please do !

Just read this article, on your way out the door, concerning why, I consider you ROBOTS.

END OF RANT

Rant: About Mongooses

animals, meerkats, captivity, zoo

Meerkats in a Zoo

These rascals were spotted in a cage at the zoo and, are probably treated alright.

I'm not too thrilled, about seeing any wildlife held captive.

But, sometimes if, it's to preserve a species from going extinct, that's sort of OK.

Animal experts, can teach youngsters about the critters and, know how to care for them.

meerkat, captive, pet store, glass cage

An alert reader contacted me today and, gave me this photo.

This meerkat is in a glass cage at a pet store and, it's for sale.

Unlike its furry friends pictured above, it probably, doesn't have a trained caretaker.

What will surely happen is, it will be bought by someone as an exotic pet.

And, when the cuteness (kawaii) wears off, you can guess where it will go.

Now for the Rant

Early in the last Century seventeen mongooses were brought to Okinawa.

The population, increased to somewhere around 30,000 and these critters are destructive !

The brilliant scientists, who brought them here, thought they knew what they were doing.

One jackass professor's name, was pointed out on an earlier blog

A little research was done, to learn more about the meerkat.

I learned that meerkats come from the mongoose family, over at Live Science .

They have more about these pretty colored mongooses at Meerkat Network, too.

If, you don't trust those sources, checkout National Geographic.

Okinawa has enough problems with mongooses, already.

Do You Think They Should Be Allowed to Sell Meerkats in Pet Stores ?

Goodbye to National Geographic Magazine

Fact Checkers Got Booted

This will be just, a short little rant and, I'll try not to cuss, too much.

To me, National Geographic Magazine, always set the gold standard for, truth in writing.

National Geographic, magazines,traveler

For decades, I have been a subscriber, in one form or another.

It was guaranteed, anything published by the magazine, had the facts verified.

Well, in some cost cutting maneuver, the fact checkers, got laid off work.

The publication, happens to be a nonprofit organization, headed by Gary Knell.

The poor guy, only makes, about a million and a half dollars per year.

At the bottom of the company, the fact checkers, didn't make half  a million dollars.

Shortly before Christmas, human beings with families to support, got fired.

Along Came This Email

It says: "As part of Preferred Subscriber Service, your subscription will be renewed automatically for one year at $32.95 when your current subscription expires in February 2016."

Traveler, subscription, renewal, notice, email

Now, I hate to tell you this, Editor and Chief Maggie Zackowitz, you have a problem.

If the fact checkers, don't come back to work, I ain't renewing my subscription.

If Gary Knell, doesn't, bring the fact checkers back, to work, tell him something, for me.

I hope the filthy rich busturd, chokes on a holiday turkey bone !

Me and this Ryukyu Island Pine Tree: L'il Rant

Pinus luchuensis,Okinawa Pine

Hunting for Special Trees

It started one day, last week, when a friend asked if I could locate a tree.

He has a  black and white picture, taken somewhere around 1950.

A few prints, were made and along with Doc Graff, the search began.

Our first stop was on the northeastern side of Okinawa.

That's where we discovered this Ryukyu Pine.

Looking around at the background and taking photos from several angles, convinced us.

Although, it's big and impressive, it wasn't the tree we were searching for.

The tree, is special or, it wouldn't have this sign posted nearby.

So, I shot the sign and some other items in the area, for further investigation.

Without any help translating, I gained some information.

For example, the tree is 220-250 years old and, I have a Latin name.

Making Friends Searching for Trees

The folks in the neighborhood of that pine tree were helpful.

Once they saw what we were trying to accomplish, they showed an interest in helping.

They agreed, we had found the wrong tree and gave us some suggestions.

They even offered some sake, to drink. It wasn't lunchtime, yet !

Nice people but, we had work to do.  So, I'll visit again, sometime.

Off to the Other Side of the Island

Up and down the west coast, we went, showing the photo of the old, special tree.

Over there, people were helpful, too.

They did stuff, like pull history books off the shelf, searching for that picture.

And, passing the photo around, gave us directions to another huge, historical tree.

But, it didn't turn out to be the one we were hunting for, either.

More on than gem, at a later date.

The rest of the story about this Ryukyu Pine, is more important.

Going 'Round and 'Round

It would probably be a good idea to go get a translator for this sort of thing.

But, I decided to try and do it on my own.

They have these online services, you can use, for free.

Take a JPEG image and get it scanned at one of them, by uploading the photo.

And, the thing turns it into a downloadable document.

So, I tried a few, using the photo, of the sign above. But, some won't read Japanese.

Once, I figured that out, I thought I had it made and, sent the image in for processing.

Then, downloaded the document, copied and pasted it into Google Translate.

And, it told me this:

Relatively Wordless: Here's A Ryukyu Inu Photo

Ryukyu Inu, an Okinawa dog

Photos - Google+ Is Amazing

Maybe, I should visit there more often.

That's how I found out, this Ryukyu Inu got almost 500 views.

The January Full Moon Is Tonight

There are a few holes in the clouds, from time to time.

I've been checking the skies, throughout the day, making plans for tonight's photography.

If it's the smallest full moon of the year, I might just get a chance to shoot it.

Usually, I shoot from in front of my office.

But, tonight, I figured out a location, out back, where I can be sheltered from the wind.

The sun is ready to go down, any minute, now.

Camera , lens and tripod, are all set to go.

Somebody, across the street, behind my house, decided it was time to start a fire.

It could be, he's burning trash, leaves, used car tires or, his mother-in-law.

So, that's why I'm relatively speechless, tonight.

A Rant: Old Goats Either Love or Hate Facebook

A Few Days Offline Floods Mailboxes

This old boy hasn't been in the office for awhile because of some good doctors.

They gave me enough medicines to keep me in bed for a week.

Instead of running around twenty hours a day and sleeping the other four, I've gone in reverse.

It's just one of those lung things and I'll be fully recovered shortly.

Out of the house for a walk, is what I told the wife I'd be doing.

No camera shooting, just post a quick blog and homepage photo and I'm outta here.

What's Great About Facebook

There were a few messages from editors hinting it would be nice to have articles.

And, I got a great big Thank You from someone who reads my blogs.

She discovered the best hamburger in Okinawa and went there Mother's Day.

Hopefully, her kids or, hubby paid.

Rant: This is the Part of Facebook I Hate

It's important to check your mailbox over there and reply when someone talks to you, I think.

Another thing, is to look for new people who have started following your site.

Normally, I'm not so far behind on all my email accounts like I was today.

Twitter, Facebook, Stumble upon send you new followers all the time.

Before I follow them back, I check their profile.  No time today but, I didn't want to be mean.

Some gal named Lisa was in the pile. She's already friends with 10 of my friends.

If you can believe the Zuckerberganator thing.

I'm in a hurry so, I added her as a Friend.  Big mistake.

Within two minutes I got a reply:

"Thanks for the add...

Have you met anyone cool on here?

ugh I have to log out right now :<

wats ur numebr?  I'll send u smoe of my pictures."

Sent from mobile

Lisa, I really don't think I can use any of your photos.

I'm not that sort of photographer.

Sometimes you have to un-add friends on Facebook.

That's what I really hate about it.

When I'm Hungry: Where's the Beef ? Short Rant/Photo Essay

Hungry Cameraman Needs Red Meat

There's nothing wrong with the vegetarian crowd.  I ain't pokin' fun at you.

Fruits and vegetables are an important part of my diet.

But, I'm carnivorous, too.

After hiking a few hills in the northern part of Okinawa, it gets hungry outside.

And, my stomach starts dreaming about woofin' down a big, juicy lunch.

The best hamburger in Okinawa would be nice, is what Map It Okinawa and I were thinking.

Once, I saw a dude eat two of them in one sitting.

Four or five times we got to the Toto La Bebe place and couldn't get in.

They must have changed their hours of operation.  What a bummer.

With juicy, red meat on our minds and stomachs growling, we headed to Nago City.

Then stopped by the Cafe Gusto.  I've had hamburgers here before.

It's a really fancy place so, I hid in the corner.

When the waitress came by I asked for a hamburger. But, they don't serve them anymore.

What you do then, if you want a decent meal is this:

Point at whatever looks good on the menu that is within your wallet's capability.

Some sort of hamburger-tasting thing was on my plate, covered with a diet sauce.

It tasted alright.  I woofed it down too fast to take a photo.

Probably, should have ordered two.  Because I left there saying...

...where's the beef ?

Facebook Gave Me A Bad Hair Day Today (Photos)

Almost ripped all the grey hairs outa my head this morning because of Facebook.

A good friend of mine, I'll just call Betty Winter (for privacy reasons) posted this:

"~~Can I make a request? Is anyone willing to post this and leave it on your status for 1 hour? It is Special Education week, Autism and ADHD Awareness month, and this is in honor of all children who struggle every day, I know 99% of you wont Re-Post this.... I know the 1% that will....~~"

Well, I figured "I'll show her 99% of my friends will do that and leave it up all day."

But, Apple, Windows 7 or Vista wouldn't let me copy and paste this important information into the Status block on my Facebook. Grrrrrr

Everybody knows someone who has one of these special children.

But, the special events this week and month, probably, not a lot of people ever heard of them.

Finally, after typing the old fashioned way, I got the word out on my Facebook.

The bad hair will get better but, I think that Mark Zuckerberg dude should spend a little cash helping out, even if it's just spreading the word.

Oh, another thing, after he gets that Facebook thing fixed.....
....I wonder if he'd have any cash left to cover the hole I ripped in my t shirt !

The Big Apple in Okinawa (Photo) Plus a Conspiracy Theory

Yesterday, even though I was in a good mood after recovering some long lost and much needed wedding photos,  I went and ranted on a few social networks about the cost of apples in Japan.
It all started when I saw these Bushel Baskets full of apples, somewhere in Ontario, Canada.

When I saw all those apples it reminded me of how much I used to love eating them. See, I did some apple picking back in the old days. There's nothing tastier than an apple picked right off the tree unless, maybe you want to wash it and chill it in the fridge for a little while. But, I kinda liked eating them while I was supposed to be picking up in the tree, where nobody could see me. Things always seem to taste even better when they're free. Fringe benefits, I guess you could call it.

Now, in Japan one good-sized apple costs somewhere in the neighborhood of around US $3.00, that's criminal if you ask me. I wouldn't think of stealing one and I refuse to pay that kind of money for an apple.

It's some sort of a conspiracy.  The MAC Computer guys may even be involved in it. I don't know who's behind this one. That gal, Eve who got Adam kicked outa the garden, still dead, right?

I'm not sure why anybody would want to charge outrageous prices for a fruit that'll just rot if they don't sell it but, I ain't fallin' for it. I've been boycotting them for years. If I find myself unable to contain the urge to eat apples, I'll plant a tree and grab my own fruit off it whenever I feel like.

This morning I got mail from Australia. Since the flooding down there, they have to pay twice as much as I would for an apple in Japan. Over $6.00 for a freakin' fresh apple; it's a conspiracy !

When I decided to rant about the cost of apples, and what I now believe to be a worldwide conspiracy, I ran across the street to the grocery store. Even took ten bucks outa the till and was gonna buy an apple, take a picture of it and post it here, so you could see the price tag.

Well, I'm showing you the Big Apple in Okinawa, instead. It's the only photo I have right now.

The gal tending the little Mom and Pop grocery store didn't have any red apples. There was a bag with three little green apples on the shelf. They were smaller than the size of a tennis ball.  I figured, what the heck, I have ten bucks, I'll see if it's enough to buy the whole bag of them.

There wasn't a price on the bag. So, I ask the gal "How much are these apples?"  She didn't know.  The truck that delivers the fruit and vegetables would be arriving shortly.  If I'd come back later we would know how much the apples cost today. So, you get the Big Apple in Okinawa.

The last time I checked, apple farmers and pickers weren't getting filthy rich and riding around in stretch limos, Eve was dead and gone and the price of apples just keeps rising. CONSPIRACY!

Tree Lovers, Here's Fukugi Trees from Okinawa Just for You ! (Photos)

There's a small village in northern Okinawa named Bise.  They have trees called Fukugi up there and all the travel agencies promote Bise and the Fukugi trees.  I just had to go and find out what the big deal is and what's special about a tree named Fukugi. So, that's what I did.

Yesterday, I wandered around with my camera to shoot all the photos I wanted pretty much undisturbed by any humans. I figured, on a weekday, there wouldn't be a bunch of tour busses dumping tourists off in the woods and I could set up my camera and tripod in the middle of the narrow streets to shoot a series of photos for any tree lovers out there who never saw a Fukugi tree.

It was cold, windy and most of the day pretty cloudy so, the only people out in that kind of weather had to be pretty much idiots, cameramen, intoxicated or maybe, tourists from Hokkaido.
Folks from way up in northern Japan, where it snows, probably think it's warm down here, not me.

Once you get off the narrow, one-lane paved road there are a couple of side streets heading towards the ocean that are just natural, a mixture of sand and clay. You don't see any litter in the streets; they are kept clean and you can tell someone rakes the sand daily. It's always clean.

As you walk farther into the tree-lined streets it gets a bit darker. The Fukugi trees pretty much block out the sun. Where you see bright light ahead lets you know how far it is to the next intersection.

There are about 250 homes in the village of Bise.  I deliberately composed these photos to eliminate them from view. This post is for tree lovers so, that's all I'm showing you, today.

A cloudy day makes it ideal for taking pictures. I've visited here many times in the past when it was sunny. The sun shining through the dark shadows these trees create make some awful high contrast photography.

This scene was shot from the outskirts of town as I was leaving. There is much more shade covering the streets the deeper you go into the interior of the village.

For the true afficionado of trees (I think that's a tree lover) I shot a close up of these leaves. I don't like to post things here and end up misidentifying trees, birds or anything. So, just in case I couldn't find the correct infomation, scientific name, common name and all that jazz, for the Fukugi tree, I'd have this shot to show and maybe, some scientist or tree lover could help me.

It's a good thing, too. After three hours online, trying to ID this tree, last night, I gave up.

Somewhere, I found out it was called a Garcinia. Well, all the searches I did showed me there were anywhere between 150 to 400 kinds of Garcinai trees. They have them all over the world and people claim these trees do all kinds of stuff, from making medicine to talking to the gods.

Now, don't get me wrong. I believe in freedom; freedom of speech, worship, free parking and keeping the internet free. Free stuff is good. There's just way too much on the internet today.

It sure would be nice if they had, like, some kind of special place for idiots to post their stuff on the internet so I wouldn't have to waste so much time sifting through garbage to find out the truth.

Couldn't somebody create a special internet for idiots and liars where they could post their stuff without aggravating the rest of us?  I'd be willing to pay. It'd be like a rodent control tax, yeah!

Oh, back to the trees. This morning, with the proper level of caffine in my body, I found what I wanted to give the tree lovers.  They are  Garcinia subelliptica and are planted around homes in Bise Village to shield them from typhoons.

Dirty Rat Spammers (Photo) Rant

Dirty Rat Spammers are trying to ruin my blog. That's what I'm going to rant about today.  After recieving many emails from folks who tried to comment but couldn't, last night I went and changed my settings. Anyone could comment but, I still had to approve the comments. And they did.

Some witch named Kate from Affordable Coursework Help (dot) com and another dirty rat from Sagittarius Tatto Design (dot) com who was smart enough to not leave his name.

The two Dirty Rats just posted a sweet comment and pasted some advertising links on my blog.

Well, just by coincidence, I happened to notice a dead, dirty rat my Huskies caught violating their space this morning and snapped a shot of it with my cellular. So, here it is. It fits perfectly.

Now, I've become a fairly non-violent person in my old age and pretty much leave people around the world alone to their own doings. If they want to be dirty rats, that's their own business and just fine and dandy with me.

Spammers, who think they can just paste advertising links on a blog I'm trying to run ad free are DIRTY RATS and I really don't like to come here and post a RANT but, something needs to be done about this. It's a worldwide problem somebody needs to get under control.

To my blog readers, I'm sorry but, I had to crank the security back up again and will have to closely monitor all comments for approval until I can figure out a better way.  It's really a shame.

To me, it's just as much a crime as going around the neighborhood and painting an advertisement on someone's home.  I wish the problem could be solved as effectively as my Huskies handled it.

Like can't the United Nations, World Bank, G20 or somebody gather all the Dirty Rat Spammers up and dip them in Boiling Canola Oil or something?  Just long enough to make them stop !

Outa Your Face Advertising

Call this a Rant.  Call me crazy if you want. Here's what I'm going to do:

                                                  OUTA YOUR FACE ADVERTISING

There's money in advertising, I know.  I want some, too.  It helps pay bills.  That'd be nice.

People come here to look at pictures and some of them read.  That's why I put stuff here.

If they think anything like I do, they don't want to see IN YOUR FACE ADVERTISING, like:

Pop-ups saying "YOU WON !"   "THIS IS NO JOKE"  "YOU ARE THE 100,000th VISITOR !"

Or,  Meet Russian, Chinese, Swiss Chocolate, French Maid, Beautiful, Single, Girls, NOW !

College Degrees Online,  Cheap Flights, Boat Rides, Hotels, Property, Massages, anywhere !

My plan is to have absolutely no advertising on this page.  I'll be moving what little I have here already off the page to my Advertising Department. That's going to take people who really can't wait to go shopping somewhere else. I will only have 1st class advertising, like products I would recommend or use myself.  I'll even do product reviews but, it will be on a different site, not here  where it distracts people who came to read and look at pictures, from reading and looking at pictures.

Please bear with me.  This will take me awhile.  There's no need to keep clicking on my Advertising Department to see the Outa Your Face Advertising because there's nothing there, yet. I have to get some gurus to help me organize it first.  I'll let you know when it's ready.

The way I figure, even if I don't make anything from Outa Your Face Advertising, it'll only be about twice what I'm not making already.  Does that make any cents (Spelchek, Shh !) to you?
