It's Almost Spring

 Okinawa Got Warm

To long-term residents of the island, anything below 70 degrees is freezing.

We get temperatures in Celsius. 70 F would be over 21 C degrees for me.

Here's an iPhone 13 image shot while traveling up north near the end of February.

It felt so warm, I took my jacket off and left it in the car.

For folks back in NY  State (where it snows) I screenshot this chart.

It was 20 degrees C at this waterfall. That's 68 degrees Fahrenheit!

Well, the warm temperatures lasted a few days. Now, I'm wearing a jacket again.

But, the weatherman says this week it will get warm again.

 March Is Sneaking Up

It's almost the end of February and the blog hasn't been touched.  It's time to update.

Not much outdoor activity has been going on due to poor health and the weather.

The health is improving and the weather almost seemed like spring for a few days.

Then winter came once again.

So Let's Get On A Health Kick

Pretty much hanging around the house and not exercising fattens folks up.

One day fumbling around on Google I discovered the benefits of canned fish.

Yeah, I consume a couple of cans of tuna each week but, here's something new.

A can of Saba Misoni is Mackerel simmered in Miso.

What the heck is Miso?  It's a paste made by fermenting soybeans in Japan.

Between mackerel and miso, there are all sorts of health benefits.

Like lowering blood pressure and cholesterol while boosting the body's immune system.

Supposedly, canned mackerel is more powerful than tuna.

During warm weather, I BBQ mackerel and think it tastes better than canned fish.

The canned stuff is like the first time you tasted beer. An acquired taste is required.

Part II Nothing to See Here

There won't be any images or videos posted, just use some imagination.

Since early September, I've had to take things easy. No lifting and no long walks.

A broken disk in the back makes life kind of miserable.  Things are slowly improving.

For the first few months, a back brace had to be worn, all day long.

No long walks and no heavy lifting were the doctor's orders.

Weekly rehabilitation visits and all sorts of therapy took place.

They even microwaved my bones!

Now that the broken disk has healed, muscles and nerves need some fine-tuning.

The painkillers I was taking (opiates) are no longer required. Amen.

Slowly getting back into an exercise routine, I still have to take it easy.

The left hip seems to malfunction frequently. Sometimes, it locks up.

Range of motion stretches and massage, along with heat therapy seems to help.

The Funny Part

Sometimes it's difficult for a therapist to determine what a patient needs to do.

Last Friday the guy says, "Mike walk on your fingers."

That seemed odd but, I bent over and started to kick my feet in the air, to do a handstand.

"No, your foot fingers."  He's Japanese. He meant to step with my toes down before my heels.

If he would have said, "Ashi no yubi," I would have understood. Now he knows, "toes."

Can you imagine what an old bearded guy looks like walking on his tip toes?

Well, I like to walk early in the morning. Before sunup, there are not a lot of people around.

Thinking I'd look like a fool, I only walked on the toes of the left foot.

That way, I'd only look like I was half crazy. Don't you think?

Whenever I spotted a car coming or someone walking their dog, I walked normally.

Tiptoes on both feet. Can you picture a ballerina in yellow flip-flops?

Anyhow, this therapy might be working. Let's wait and see.

This Ain't the Moon!

 Update on Volcano Eruptions

Uncooperative weather has canceled my full moon photography for October.

Mount Aso, in Kyushu, Japan blew its top and sent us these floating rocks.

Another one (underseas) at the Ogasawara Islands (near Iwo Jima) sent plenty more!

Many of our beaches are covered with pumice stones.

The ocean tides delivered volcanic pumice stones to beaches throughout the Okinawa islands.

Have you ever used a pumice stone to grind down callouses on your feet?

Well, I had to kick off the flip-flops and walk on the stuff, to see what it feels like.

This isn't some thirst trap; it's to give you a sense of scale. Ladies, GET BACK!

Here's what a size 12 left foot looks like in pumice stones on the beach.

The lightweight stones didn't fall out of the sky, where they might hit us on the heads.

They were delivered here by the sea.  Kyushu is over an hour's flight time from here.

What appears to be black sand in the lower part of this photo, is volcanic pumice.

We discovered this treasure at Uza Beach on the northern tip of Okinawa island.

A bag was filled with stones, to show the wife the floating rocks TV news was broadcasting.

Gardening with Pumice

Back at home, I did some research and learned about other uses for pumice stones.

We just might have to return to that beach and fill buckets with pumice stones.

Until last night, I never heard about using pumice stones in planters and gardens.

They call them soil amendments and, you can even throw the stuff into compost piles!

Decisions, decisions, buy garden pumice online or, go to the beach and get some FREE?

Don't Panic

Friends, relatives, people around the globe don't worry about us in Okinawa, Japan.

The volcanic eruption at Mount Aso is no big deal. We're all fine.

JAN 2021 Full Moon Setting Plus

A Bird and Some Blossoms as a Bonus 

Clouds and cold weather kept the recent full moon inaccessible for the past few nights.

Waking up at 3 AM gave me a chance to capture the moon setting this morning.

It was bright, setting in the western sky and I climbed up on the roof with the camera and tripod.

Before an image could be composed, dark black clouds rolled onto the scene.

Leaving everything set up for another try, I went down to the kitchen for a coffee break.

It would be after 6 AM before a (somewhat) clear shot could be made. AT 6:16, here you go!

Before Sunrise - A Hike with Backpack and Cameras

It was windy and cold with temperatures in the low teens Celcius. It felt like Alaska.

There weren't many farmers in their fields and few birds were in the skies.

By 9 AM the sun was warming things but, it was still windy. Time to head for home.

At 9:05 this Blue Rock Thrush appeared in a tree alongside the road.

It would be the only bird shot taken today.

Some Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) Encountered Enroute

Had the blue skies and sunshine held up, we may have seen some more birds.

Japanese White Eyes (Mejiro) love these flowers and hang out in the branches.

Clouds blocked the sun and no birds were to be seen in the Cherry Tree.

So, the camera was positioned where a white tiled roof served as the background.

Leaving this scene, the sun peeked through the clouds briefly.

At 9:32 AM a quick maneuver of the tripod and camera captured this scene.

Ducks Can Brighten Up a Rainy Day in Okinawa

 

Out for a quick four-hour walk in the wind and rain, this was one image I decided to save.

Normally, the dog and I would be out for five hours or longer in better weather.

Lots of time was spent getting shelter from the cold drizzle, beneath a highway overpass.

The ducks (Northern Shovelers) hangout in wetlands, sucking what they eat from the water.

Sometimes a flooded field and other times, this canal they're seen taking flight from.

They migrate here for the winter months and I photograph them almost daily.

It's lots more fun, taking long walks on sunny days with blue skies.

But, any time spent outdoors beats sitting around stuck indoors, on a day in December.

Morning After Full Moon MAR 2020

The Full Moon Avoided Us on Okinawa

Most of the time, over the past three days and nights, clouds and rain covered the sky.

Up at 4 AM each morning, I peeked out the back door, to see if, I could catch moon-set.

The weather channel was guessing a 95% chance of rain beginning at 5 AM.

Daybreak was coming and it looked like I might get a chance to walk the dog.

Checking the weather channel again suddenly, there was a 0% chance of rain.

Walking down to the beach, I caught the moon going down with clouds on the horizon.

Slim Chance of Seeing It Tonight

This image shows the moon at 99.3% full. Around 8 PM tonight it will be at 100%.

The Weather Channel on my iPhone shows clouds all day and tonight.

The moon may or, may not peek through the clouds this evening.

So, when I noticed it appear this morning, I went out behind the house and shot the sucker.

Touring the Island

We'll be out there somewhere in Okinawa doing our usual Friday camera day.

It has been determined, the best excursions take place when we have no plans.

So, on Friday mornings, we just hop in a car and head off to locations unknown.

We decide North, South, East or West after the car doors are slammed.

Sometimes we'll hit all four directions in one day!

Tonight as the sun goes down I'll be checking the skies for a moon appearance.

If it decides to cooperate, I'll go out and shoot the sucker again.

Nine Image Animation

A lot can happen, when out shooting the full moon on Okinawa.

The series of photos, used to create this scene, were taken between 6:20 and 6:26 PM.

 The wind was blowing black clouds through the sky and shaking my camera lens.

The color of the moon, changed during that time period, too.

After downloading the camera and, posting images on the blog, I went out for a drink.

Joking with a guy in the bar, I said,"The moon's a moving target."

He agreed and said, "I know. I'm a meteorologist."

That was my chance to ask him, "How come the color of the moon changes, so fast?"

Well, about that time, a beautiful woman, walked into the bar.

So, I quit paying attention to the weatherman. Amen.

Whether You Like It or Not

Weather Will Change

Groan.  Not enough sun rays have been coming my way, the past few days.

Maybe, I'm one of those solar-powered creatures. I don't know.

A gallon of milk or a handful of Vitamin D pills, won't do the trick. I need sunshine.

Usually, I get some people to smile, on my walk to work. That didn't happen today.

Even homeless folks, know better than, to walk around smiling, in this kind of weather.

Well, I walk around smiling, anyway but,  there's nobody out there, to smile back.

Feeling kind of miserable, I decided to pull this old photo out of the files.

Maybe, it'll brighten up someone else's day, too. Blue skies help.

And, looking forward to the end of the month, I'm sure the sunshine will be back again.

 Little Confession

Normally, I don't go around stealing things. Maybe, this wasn't really theft.

We won't discuss the location just in case, the statute of limitations, is still in effect.

There was a pile of books, several piles of books, stacked in boxes.

They were in a hallway and, nobody was around, looking. So, I got to looking.

Two of the books, on top of a pile, were identical.  Imagine that.

Now, this wasn't outside some bookstore. And, they looked like old books, mind you.

It wasn't as if, they were all brand new and wrapped up in cellophane.

The two book covers, were identical, sort of maroon colored and, had the same title.

So, I got thinking, "Nobody reads two books at the same time." And, got me one.

From watching enough movies, I knew how to get away with the crime.

Don't let anyone catch you and, you stick the thing inside your pocket, quickly.

World's Most Depressing Book

The title of this masterpiece, won't be revealed, for legal purposes. Statute of Limitations.

 I can tell you it was written by some doctor and, the subject was, "Depression."

The guy started off, saying stuff about how, he didn't believe in depression.

Then he got into chapters two and three. He got depressed and, says, it can happen to anyone.

The more you read, the more depressed you get, until it becomes "Crippling Depression."

The sick bastard doctor was, crippling me with depression, reading his damn book.

Maybe, that was his plan. Get lots of people, to by antidepressant drugs from him.

Anyhow, I never made it through the third chapter. And, never swiped a book again.

See, I cured myself without, taking any medication. No more kleptomania.

Grey Skies Make Me Blue

If,  I wake up to another dreary sky day tomorrow, I'll find a way to make it better.

There has to be something I can do, to get depressed folks smiling.

If, saying, "Good morning" and smiling, doesn't work, I'll think of something else.

Maybe, walk in my underwear, with my trousers tied around my neck. That may work.

What would be even better, is to see the sun come out !

Chasing the May 2017 Full Moon Over Kin Town

Limited Visibility

Here's one of the reasons, I plan on shooting the moon, three nights a month.

The weather and cloud conditions can be tricky and sometimes, make it impossible.

Yesterday, I was awake before sunup and had an extremely busy day.

In the evening, I downloaded the camera and began processing a few hundred photos.

As the sun went down, I checked the skies, every few minutes. Things didn't look good.

Heavy black clouds, kept drifting across the sky. I figured, the moon would never appear.

Having taken photos of the near-full-moon on the previous two nights, I was alright.

The seventeen hour day began wearing me out. I was beat and, ready to call it quits.

Too tired, to put the camera away, I left it on a tripod and, placed the lens cap on my desk.

That would remind me, to charge the battery and, lock the camera up in it's storage container.

Around 10 PM the Moon Began Showing

Heavy clouds were blowing and portions of the moon, peeked through them.

If that moon showed up and I, didn't catch it, things would be mighty miserable around here.

A quick U-turn back to the office. Grab the camera and tripod and get back to work.

Twenty minutes to half an hour, might get the job done. The moon's gonna show !

Some Sample Shots in a Slideshow

Normally, I would use the camera timer, to get the sharpest images.

But, those clouds were moving way too fast, for such a luxury.  And, it was windy.

The best thing to do, was use continuous firing mode and, take 3 rapid shots at a time.

Once, I was satisfied, two or three sharp images were captured, I went back inside the office.

The camera battery was removed for recharging and, I locked it up.

A little trick: Store the camera upside down, until morning. Lens cap, on my desk.

That would remind me to download the images and replace the battery.

Close to 100 photos were on the SD card and, 60 of them were deleted.

The photo at the top of this page, was one of three, I really liked.

Animation: Flying Fish and a Plane

Plane - A Weathervane

Not the typical flying fish, either. These are Koinobori or, carp pennants.

Luckily, we got up to the Village of Oku, early in Golden Week.

Living on a Pacific Island, you never know, when the weather might take a turn.

Beautiful blue skies were over the Ryukyu Island Chain, yesterday.

Wearing blue jeans and a t-shirt, it was a little bit warm.  So, I switched to shorts today.

Wouldn't you know it.  A cold breeze, cloudy skies and rain, showed up today.

Fortunately, a flannel shirt was hanging around in my office and, it's on me, now.

All Part of the Master Plan

The weather gurus were a little bit off with the forecast today but, it didn't kill me.

Up bright and early, I checked the weather channel and, it wasn't looking good.

The rain was supposed to start at 7:30 so, after breakfast, I went back to bed.

Somebody poured way too many beers down my throat last night.

By 9AM, I was stumbling around, as usual, in and out between the garden and kitchen.

And, whacked a toe on something sharp. Ouch, I almost cussed.

The wife noticed the blood, all over the floor. It was probably an hour, after the toe got cut.

So, I told her, "Check the stupid dog. He probably did it."

Before long, it was discovered, my little toe, was where all the blood came from.

Everything's fixed and patched up, now. Maybe, I'll buy her a steak dinner.

Next, I promised there wouldn't be any strenuous exercises or drinking done today.

Leaving the house, I told her and the dog, I was going to school.

Japan Travel Advanced Master

It's not really like graduating from some elite university, with a Master's Degree.

Heck, I've lived over half my life, in Japan. It should be a breeze, for me.

It was a little tricky, though. They made me do the basic course, all over again.

That was completed a few years ago and, I guess, my certification expired. Groan.

It took about two hours of testing, to get me certified so, I could go to the next level.

That series of quizzes and final exams, took another four hours.

It was worth all the effort.  Now, I get access to all kinds of hookups, throughout Japan.

It kept me indoors, most of the day. Now, it's raining and, I forgot my umbrella.

Here's the Plan

No heavy lifting or hiking was what I said, as I left for the office this morning.

Something I saw on the internet, gave me this idea.

Take a yoga mat and place it close to a wall.  Lay down with the feet, propped against the wall.

It's supposed to be good for relaxing and, get blood, back in your brain.

Then, I'll get some takeout steak dinners and, ride a taxi home !

Not This Way Earlier Today

Horrible gray sky with on and off rain showers sort of ruined my temperament today.

Some of the crazy remedies, I have consist of going out under a carport for exercise.

Several times a day, I get away from the computer monitors, to rest my eyes and get refreshed.

About 4:30 PM the sun, finally started shining. I decided to go for a walk, to buy some drinks.

The clouds, looking like a plowed field, I noticed as I left the office. Camera ?  Not yet.

Knowing, my luck if, I ran to grab something for photography, it would start raining, again.

 I spent 15 minutes, walking and enjoying the sunshine, while going for my refreshments.

It's a 2 minute walk to the vending machine but, I was formulating a plan.

By the time, I returned the clouds started moving in a direction, that suited me.

There wouldn't be time, to catch the scene, I wanted if, I fooled around changing lenses.

So, I grabbed the camera, I was using yesterday, equipped with an 18-250MM zoom.

Not too wild about telephone and electrical wires in my compositions, I shot, anyway.

Those distractions can be removed, afterwards but, I didn't feel like doing that.

When the timing was right, I climbed up on the roof and, shot this scene at 18MM.

Then, I started wondering, what those clouds would be called. I did some research.

At Allexperts (dot) com, somebody asked the same question, I put in the search engine.

What are those clouds called, that look like furrows, in a plowed field ?

They could be Altocumulus Undulatus.

Er maybe, Altocumulus Mackerel Sky 

 At the National Weather Service, 10 basic types of clouds are listed so, you can learn.

These clouds only lasted a few minutes, I'm guessing but, they made me happy.

Next time, I went out for some exercise and a break, they were all gone.

The wind blew and stuff flew and, who wants to be a weatherman anyway ?

There's a Chance of Rain

The weather gurus tricked me, again. I decided not, to take a long camera excursion.

They claimed, we'd have scattered showers. Maybe, it'll happen after dark.

That's alright though, I climbed up onto the roof and, took two quick photos.

Looking east, ocean is barely visible, at the horizon.

This position is where I shoot the moon from, when I don't feel like going on a long hike.

The wife and I, went on sort of a Christmas date last evening and, partied hard.

By 3 AM, we figured there was enough cold preventative medicine in us to last all winter.

We took a taxi, to get home and, I believe, she's probably, still sleeping.

It was 3 PM, when I climbed the stairs to the roof of my office and, shot this photo.

There's not enough daylight hours left, for me to get a few hours of walking done.

So, I think, I'll listen to my body, go home and get some rest.

Then, grab a raincoat, go see what's going on downtown and, do some conditioning.

There's another holiday weekend, coming soon and, I want to stay in shape !

Blame It on Writer's Block

It happens sometimes, to writers. The brain, cramps up and, doesn't help you think straight.

Yesterday, I was going to post a nifty folk story, I've been working on, for months.

Several different sources, gave me various versions of the tale. That can be handled.

Folklore can change from one village to another. And the storyteller may modify it a bit.

It just, wouldn't all come together, for me, last night. Brain and body said, "Go home."

So, that's what I did.  Didn't even stop by a watering hole for my usual few beers.

Things Were Looking Brighter Today

Up before the sun, I checked to find out what the meteorologists predicted for today.

Cold and, mostly cloudy, they claimed. Good. Bundle up warm and do office work all day.

If, it was mostly sunny, I'd have been tempted, to walk for hours, outdoors with the camera.

With six pages of copy paper, attached to a clipboard, I started my rough draft.

The world's worst typist, I like to do a scribbled outline and, smooth on paper, first.

To start, I draw about a one inch column on the right side of each page. That's for notes.

Why a clipboard?  That comes in handy, when I go outside for a break. Pen comes, too.

Sitting down, at a desk for more that 20 minutes, ain't natural, for me.

So, I get up stretch and, go out to a picnic table, where I can think clearly and, smoke.

The clipboard, keeps things from blowing away. And, my brain works best outdoors, too.

Grinding away, things were getting organized and, some progress was being made.

Then, about three, in the afternoon, everything came to a halt. Brain stopped working.

Cuss, stand up and stretch; get out of the office for some fresh air.

Sunshine and Blue Skies with White Clouds !

The clipboard and pen, are my witnesses. I scratched a few more notes and, quit.

There's no sense, writing once the gears in the brain stop spinning.

With the Pentax, a big lens and the tripod, I went hunting for an eagle, who never showed.

Walking around in a quarter mile circle, from my office, I grabbed an occasional iced coffee.

Sunshine and cold coffee, can work wonders on my spirits, even on a December day.

The trees in that animation, are where, I was hoping to catch, that elusive feathered friend.

The bird never showed and, I was out there for over two hours. So, I got thinking.

Just shoot the clouds and trees. Maybe, someone will appreciate them.

The weather, can change every five minutes, on this island. Poor weathermen.

How can they decide, what to tell us, when it can change so suddenly?

The weather, can be as fickle as a mail order bride. Somebody, said that on TV once.

It might have been that guy Gabby Hayes, with the chuckwagon, on a Western.

Well, I never had a mail order bride or even, ever fickled one. But, it's true.

Folks, back in the 1900's, used to get mail order brides. Imagine that.

Well, tomorrow possibly, I'll be done fickling around with that folk story. 

That's providing, the sun don't shine !

Cheer Up Folks in Snow Country

It felt like springtime out in Ginoza, where they had a Hamburger Festival today.

There were some classic cars and bikes, to look at but, I liked the Eisa dances best.

Now, I'm back in my office processing photos and, the temperature dropped a few degrees.

Clouds rolled in and the wind started picking up so, I put a jacket on.

I'll try and get back into the house, without the Mrs. seeing me; I don't want any trouble.

If, I get caught, I know she'll holler because, I went out in shorts and flip-flops.

She'll probably say, "You're gonna catch a death of a cold, dressed like that."

It Didn't Show Last Night

 

 

Severe weather hid the moon from us on the 24th but, here is is now.

Some people even said, they saw snow, sleet and hail, over the past 24 hours.

Now, folks in Alaska and along the east coast of the USA probably, know what snow looks like.

To me, it's this white stuff, that plies up and has to be shoveled off the streets.

That's one of the many reasons, I live in Okinawa and, not in snow country.

Y'all stay warm and safe.  I got the moon tonight and, it's time to go celebrate.

Maybe If Hell Freezes Over !

 

 

Usually, I like to post images of sunshine filled locations on this island.

But, lately the wicked weathermen have been predicting cold and even, snow.

What's up with all the global warming, everybody screams about ?

It felt like it was freezing as I walked towards the office this morning.

Bundled up in a parka, I started wishing I had some gloves to wear; it was cold and windy.

Luckily, a daughter came along and drove me halfway in her heated van.

Looking at the dashboard, she pointed out the outside temperature to me.

It was 9 degrees Celsius.  That's cold, when you have a strong ocean breeze.

At the office, I had to search for a conversion chart, online, to see how cold it really was.

Over at Conversion Metric Org they tell me:

 9 °C = 48.2 °F

Here I am freezing, wearing an Alaskan parka and, socks with my flip-flops.

Weather dudes are saying the temperature tonight will drop down to 6 °C.

6 °C, and that's a blazing 42.8 °F  !

So, I figure there's not much sense investing money in snow shovels, around here.

Could Use a Little More Sunshine Around Here

Somebody Opened the Spigot Again !

 

 

It was almost like a summer day, yesterday and, I got a good six hours of sun. 

Well, I must have insulted, somebody up there because, the island is getting hosed today.

To cheer myself up, I dug up this photo from last June, taken from a boat.

It's better than, walking around, outside, with an umbrella but, it didn't quite do the trick.

So, I went over to YouTube and found a tune that might tickle everybody.

Hearing Johnny Cash and June Carter, sing that tune was alright.

But, watching them, get the audience going, was even better.

Someone needs to figure out a way to re-distribute rainfall and sunshine, around the globe.

Okinawa got a fair share of water.  Give the rain to somebody, who really needs it. 

Then, I promise, I'll sing this tune in the shower, everyday !

The mission, I was on, had nothing to do with wildlife but, that's what I'd rather be shooting.

There are some egrets in the trees and, a crow flew through, briefly.

There are all kinds of special events scheduled for the weekend.

And, I was planning on being busy Friday, Saturday and Sunday, attending them all.

But, it started raining outside. I went and checked the weather online.

5 and 10 day forecasts and several sites, all say the same thing: Rain.  Groan.

Some alternate plans will have to be made, for me and the cameras.

Unless, some of the weather experts, are wrong, all we'll see is rain.

So, you'll have to enjoy these dam birds, until I get a chance to shoot some more.
