Travel Photo: Sunset from West Coast of Hamahiga Island

Off island doing some cultural photography, had me on Hamahiga-jima.

Before leaving that island, I decided to checkout the setting sun.

Playing around with different exposure settings, I took 5 or six shots of Okinawa's east coast.

The place looks pretty small, from this perspective but, it's really not that tiny.

For example: Driving home during the hours of darkness, I got lost twice !

This is the view from Sesoko Island, looking towards Okinawa.

The photo was taken at 6:45 and, I would walk to the halfway point before dark.

The idea, was to take photos of fireworks around 8PM.

The fireworks display was taking place at Expo Park in Motobu.

It was fairly challenging, shooting a camera.

Too many people decided to drive over the bridge and park on it to watch the show.

That didn't bother me.  It was the traffic jams they were causing and the glare of headlights.

Along came the police with their loudspeaker and, they chased everybody away.

It made me so happy, I wanted to buy those guys some donuts !

Heard Mostly on Hot and Humid Days

 

 

When the thermometer is almost busting and it's near 98% humidity you'll hear them.

This morning, I woke up late. The sun was already shining.

The wife was in the kitchen and I asked her if it was raining outside.

My hearing isn't all that great. It sounded like it was raining.

The noise, was coming from the cicida bugs, she said.

Out behind the office, I spotted this one on a trellis.

Usually, they are hiding in trees and hard to photograph so, I grabbed a camera.

Lots of people hate these bugs because they are so noisy.

Kids, in Japan love them probably,  because the sounds remind them of Summer Vacation.

If you catch one, while it's making all the noise, it's sort of cool.

They buzz and wiggle, tickling the palm of your hand. Kids enjoy stuff like that.

It's fun to stuff one down the back of someone's shirt, too.

This one wasn't making any noise.

It flew from the trellis over to a plant in the shade.

So, I was able to get a dozen quick photos and have this motion GIF made.

Searching for some decent YouTube sounds of the bug didn't pan-out, too well.

It would have been nice, to give you some of the sounds they make.

But, I found something, even better.

An easy way to remember the Japanese name for the bug is here in this video.

Just leave off the "Say You" part and say, "Say Me."

The trip on this boat, going from Naha to the Kerama Islands is fast.

In less than an hour, after leaving Tomarin Port, you can set feet on Zamami-jima.

Some travelers, go below and stay in the air-conditioned spaces.

But, I like to hangout in the fresh air and watch normal people doing touristy things.

Those folks, staying down below and, watching TV, just don't know what they missed.

Catching up on the processing of photos from this race may take awhile.

This boat, with the yellow sails caught my attention, the night before the race.

 A sabani with an outrigger, I had seen before.

But, it was the first time, I had ever seen one with two sails.

They seem to move a lot faster than a single-sail sabani boat.

But, I bet, it takes twice as long to learn how to sail them.
