5 Images from Iris Fields in Kijoka, Ogimi, Okinawa

Bursting with Purple

The season began 10 days early this year, according to the local news channel.

Luckily, I was watching the evening Japanese news when it was featured.

Otherwise, I may have missed the purple blossoms entirely this year.

April is a busy month, with all sorts of springtime rituals, throughout Okinawa.

People Offended by Purple Shouldn't Go Here

One of the things I enjoy about travel writing is, getting people inspired to visit.

A few photos I posted on Facebook were viewed over 8,000 times in the past 12 hours!

Everybody can't love purple but, lots of folks on Facebook do so, here are some more.

Just the day before these photos were taken, we were freezing in Okinawa.

The temperatures dropped down to the low teens for a few days.

Centigrade teens, means turn on the heat and wear layers of clothing in this part of the world.

Luckily, the fields were not flooded and muddy. I had socks on with my flip-flops.

Purple happens to be a favorite color of mine because it goes well with yellow.

Those who know me know, I don't wear any other color flip-flops but yellow.

That's a hint, just in case somebody wants to give me a gift. Size 12 would be good, too.

The iris fields are surrounded by green hills and fun to photograph at wide angles.

Another thing I like about this place is, they sell stalks of the flowers, to take home.

They are less expensive than visiting a flower shop and, women love them.

So, I spring for about 10 bucks worth, every time I visit the iris fields in bloom.

It keeps the wife from complaining about my muddy flip-flops, coming into the house.

For the Purple Haters, here are some cosmos and daisies, to distract you from the iris flowers.

But, I still recommend staying away from the Iris Fields of Kijoka. Hah!

Have You Ever Been Sucked Into an Iris Field ?

Iris fields and visitors Ogimi Okinawa

Dozens of Visits to Kojika Iris Fields

Poke the word "Iris" into the search block, up left and, you can see, I've been many times.

It's not because I'm all that thrilled about flowers. It's for everybody else, who might be.

Recently, I've been having sort of writer's block and, gave it some thought.

Doc and I discussed it.  Maybe, it's because, we visit the same places, too much.

Take photos of all the festivals, rituals, seasonal flowers, once and, you're done.

How many original writings, can you get, out of the same purple flowers?

Iris fields, hillsides, wide angle image

With a zoom lens, you can take close-up and wide-angle photos for variation.

And, moving around the area, get different scenery to display, for flower-loving folks.

Woman photographer in iris field

It's fun, to take shots of another, serious photographer, out shooting the iris blossoms.

We met earlier and, I forgot to get her name. She knew me from Facebook.

It's rewarding, to hear from people, following the blog. They thank me, for doing it.

Most of them recognize me because I'm always wearing a scraggly beard and flip-flops.

Usually, it's yellow flip-flops. Sometimes, I try, not-to-be so flashy and, wear green or blue.

Doesn't seem to fool them, though. Could it be, I should buy some new t-shirts?

Single iris blossom, close-up

A visit to the iris fields, wouldn't be complete if, a close-up shot of one blossom, wasn't taken.

This one had great color but, the wind didn't cooperate, while it was being composed.

Sometimes, I think some wire and clothespins, would be the way to go.

Move things around a bit and the rascals could be held still, for better photography.

Iris field with forest in background

After walking around a while, taking pictures, something dawned on me.

It seemed as if the fields behind us had flowers with more, deep purple colors.

Not sure if it was the way the clouded sun rays, were filtering the light, I decided to go check.

White Egret near iris field

As Doc and I header to the farther fields, we noticed this egret, entertaining itself.

That's a bird, I really don't need to photograph anymore but, what the heck.

Sometimes, they do something interesting. Fly into the flowers, you dummy!

It didn't do anything special, for me but, I saved the image anyway.

Uneventful Would Soon Slip Away

Really, I shouldn't say that.  Already, we had met two pretty girls and the guy with them.

He was six feet 10 inches tall. That's probably why I forgot to ask that girl her name.

Anyhow, over on the back side of the fields, the flowers were, more purple.

Vertical image, purple iris, close-up

One of the things, I always try to do, is get the Purple Dragon-looking Iris.

That would be, one that looks like a dragon, sticking its tongue out at you.

After capturing this one, it would have been alright, to call it a day and, go do lunch.

The flower colors were more awesome in this location but the paddy dikes were muddier.

Walk faster, is what I do when the mud starts trying to pull the flip-flops off my feet.

There were tracks of a wild boar, along the way. They were kind of small.

If a little piggy can make it through there, people should be able to, too. So, I figured.

Ryukyu Mike, leg slips off paddy dike in iris fields

The mud kept getting softer and softer and, I was going faster and faster.

Slipping and slopping, I was flip-flopping as fast as the legs could go when it happened.

The rest of the photography is courtesy of Doc, smart enough to stay behind me.

Ryukyu Mike struggling in the mud

The left leg, it appears, slipped down the dike, into something like quicksand.

This probably seems sort of humorous, to the average person but, it ain't, I swear.

Doc was back there saying, "You alright? Do you need help?" It wasn't alright.

When ya try to pull yourself out, it doesn't work too well.  Soon, ya sink in further.

Pulling the leg up a bit, lets air get in there and, I don't float on air so well.

Pretty soon, the mud was up to my knee. Shuck-noises come out of the mud.

And, the body gets to go in, deeper and deeper. "Stay back, Doc or, we're both going in."

Predicaments are things, I've gotten used to over the years. Where's a wrecker?

A winch with a long cable could drag me right out of the field.  But, there was none around.

Extracting Yourself

One.  This is a good excuse to keep your body in shape.

Two.  Don't try pulling your leg, straight up and out.

Three.  Curl your toes if, you don't want to lose a flip-flop.

Four.  Twist the leg left and right while pulling.

Five: Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle sounds are good. Mud is displacing your leg, coming out.

Muddied Ryukyu Mike, flip-flops off, iris field

Once, I was safely ashore, I gave Doc, thumbs up and posed with a broken flip-flop.

There was no sense, putting the things back on until we got to some clean water.

Walking the iris field paddy barefoot

Along the next dike of the paddies, I was more careful, watching my footing.

Soon, we would find fresh, running water, to wash the mud away and, salvage my footwear.

At home, the wife was thrilled with the flowers I gave her. Then, she noticed me and the mud.

Her: "What happened to you?"

Me: "Nothing. It'll be on the blog tomorrow.  I need a beer and a hot shower."

Flower of the Day: Purple Iris

Okurareruka, Iris, flower, Kijoka, Okinawa

Fields of Purple

The Okurareruka (iris flowers) in Kijoka, Ogimi, Okinawa are going full bloom.

For tonight, I'll just give everyone a peek at this beauty. I have to run.

It was an adventurous day. I was almost, swallowed alive. More later.

Flower Photos: Pontederia -- You Can Eat Some Parts

iris,pickerelweed, pickerel rush,water,plant

Growing Alongside Iris in a Flooded Field

When I first saw it, I called it a purple corn-dog because, that's what it looked like, to me.

I was spending a few bucks on iris flowers so, I asked what the name of this flower might be.

The gal, looked at the LCD screen on my camera and said, "Pontederia."

Then, I asked her if, she could write it down on paper, for me.  She was glad to help me.

She knows every time, I come there, I buy some flowers, to take home for my bride.

Before, writing it down, she checked with two other elderly women working there.

They, all agreed Pontederia (ポンテデリヤ) was the plant's name.

Pontederia, plant, flower,ポンテデリヤ

With all the iris photos, I had to process, this purple corn dog, had to wait.

Heck, I even went back to the iris fields, the next day and, took more photos.

Yesterday, I decided it was time, to turn in a month overdue book to the library.

Armed with an overdue flower book and, a smartphone snap of this flower, off I went.

The gals at the Kin Library, all know me; I'm always turning in books late.

They have a drop-box, you can deposit books in if, you don't want to o inside.

But, I like to apologize for being late and, talk to the librarians.

This time, I gave the book back and, went off, on my own, to research the purple flower.

After about 20 minutes, not being able to locate a book with Pontederia, I asked for help.

A librarian at the front desk, researched it on her computer.

BINGO !  She found it and the Latin name: Pontederia cordata.

Thanking her, I left the library, knowing, I could find this flower online.

The common names for the plant are Pickerelweed and Pickerel rush.

Is Anybody Out There Hungry ?

The seeds of the plant can be eaten, just like some sort of wheat germ.

The young leaves can also, be used as greens in cooking your meals.  I just take pictures.

Flower Photos: Iris Fields in Kijoka District of Ogimi Okinawa

purple and yellow, iris, flower,オクラレルカ

Okurareruka (オクラレルカ) is What Locals Call Them

The fields were in full bloom last weekend and, there are still many purple flowers to see.

For me, going early or, late in the season is much more relaxing.

hills, fields, flowers, iris

Weekend crowds, tour buses and mobs of people, posing for pictures can be annoying.

It's more fun, even when the skies are grey, when few visitors come to the fields.

close-up, iris, flowers, field

The sky is easily eliminated, when close-up shots, fill the camera frame.

So, I just go around the fields, looking for which ever iris plants, I want to be subjects.

flower, purple and yellow, iris

The fields are flooded with water so, it isn't easy to get closeup shots.

The best thing to do, is stand on the dikes and use a zoom lens if, you want to stay dry.

flower, iris,single plant, green stems

Some folks, say these iris flowers, look like a dragon, sticking its tongue out.

So, I go looking for flowers that might fit that description and, shoot them.

hills, flowers, field, sky, house

When, I think the mission has been accomplished, I back-off and take one last photo.

Then, buy some flowers, to take home to the wife.

Tell her, it was a terrible day, up there, she won't feel like she missed out on something.

The flowers, I bring home, make her happy.  She'll look at this  image.

And, be glad I didn't drag her along with me.  Hah !

It's Almost Okurareruka (オクラレルカ) Time of the Year !

flowers, Iris,purple and yellow, fields

Friday in Kijoka

Just for the heck of it, we took a detour at Ogimi Village, to check the iris fields.

Just about every flower festival held this year, the flowers forgot to bloom on time.

It looks like the Okurareruka (Iris) flowers are getting ready to party, on schedule.

flower, iris, bud, fields

A few close-up shots were taken, to trick people in to visiting the iris fields.

But, if you really love viewing these flowers, it might be best to wait a bit longer.

iris flowers, field,buds,stems

Backing off a little bit with the lens, things look a little bit different, up there.

There's probably less than one percent of the plants blossoming.

flower, fields, iris, Okurareruka

The Missus in my house, goes crazy when, she hears the Okurareruka plants are blooming.

She'd be awful disappointed if, she went all the way up north, to see these fields.

hills, fields, flowers, iris

Guys, know what happens, when you take a woman out and, there aren't any flowers to see.

Who would want to take their wife, to see something like this ?

Figure, you are an hour away from home (by car) and, a woman came along with you.

She'll get angry and say something like, "Lets go shopping."  Groan !

Give that place enough time, to turn into a sea of purple.  That's my plan.

Maybe, in another two weeks, I'll say something to the wife, about Okurareruka flowers.

Iris Fields Blooming in Kijoka -- Now's the Time to Visit

10 Flower Photos from Today's Travels

The weather may be a bit windy and cloudy, at times but, the view is magnificent.

If you like purple blossoms, you'll love these.

purple and yellow Iris, flower

The official flower reports are saying, full bloom takes place this weekend and next.

My unscientific estimate says the fields are blooming over 70% right now.

If you've been living anywhere near snow country, these flowers will soothe your eyes.

They bounce around, a little bit in the wind.

It's more fun, trying to photograph flowers in the wind than it is, shoveling snow !

It's best to get out there and visit before the end of this month.

Before too long, rainy season will hit Okinawa.

A typhoon could sneak up on us and, blow all these blossoms away.

They sell these long-stemmed flowers at unbelievably low prices.

Five of them cost less than a cup of coffee !

Scattered Sunshine and Flowers in Nothern Okinawa

cherry blossoms, tree, flowers

On Mt. Yaedake there are very few cherry blossoms remaining.

sakura blossoms, Mt. Yaedake

So, one tree was selected for some experimental photography.

Then, it was time to get off the mountain and visit Ogimi to check on the iris fields.

sign, bilingual,birds, flowers

It was nice of the folks in Kijoka to post this bilingual sign.

Entering the iris field area, things were looking pretty green but, no flowers were visible.

Driving around the entire valley turned out to be a good idea.

iris field, flowers

Way, way, way back in the fields, we spotted some flowers blooming.

iris blossom, flower

This iris was singled out for some experimentation, too.

Cherry blossoms will probably be all gone in another week or two.

The purple iris plants are starting to blossom but, wait another month, would be my guess.

For a day in February, I can't complain about the weather.

Where else do people get scattered sunshine and flowers, this time of the year ?

First Iris Blossoms of 2015 Spotted in Kin Town

purple Iris flower

Coming back from a long morning of photography, I discovered this.

It was windy and, flowers weren't on the schedule but, I had to take a shot.

The 300mm lens was on the camera for bird photos but, it worked for this quick snap.

It's usually March or April before we get to see these purple iris blossoms.

Somebody planted the things in the park at Okawa Spring.

Maybe, we'll start seeing these beauties, year round, right here in my hometown !

Okinawa's Iris Fields Are in Full Bloom Right Now !

Some Photos and a Few Tricks

The other day, I saw it on the morning news.

Big, bright green stems with purple, yellow and white flowers, dancing in the wind.

But, I'm a warm weather type of person so, I waited for today.

It's nice to have some blue sky in your photo.

To get up high enough for this shot, I brought along a two-step ladder.

For those who don't appreciate blue skies, I aimed lower.

The petals on lots of flowers, are starting to wilt.

So, it's a good idea, to move around and pick on ones you like.

Sometimes, you can find a young rascal, away from the crowd.

Just focus on the one you like best and, wait for it to quit moving.

When you get home, crop the photo any way you like.

For this photo, I got down low on the ground.

Experimenting with a black and white board for background, was fun.

The black turned out to be my favorite.

So, I threw the white one away.  Hah !

Iris bloom up-close

It was a nice sunny day and I had some fun.

If you are already in Okinawa, you best get up to Ogimi this weekend.

It looks like these beauties will be done blooming in the near future.

This will be the final Iris Report for 2014 from this desk.

But, standby for plenty more flower festivals, in the coming weeks and months.
