Blazing Trails from a King's Grave to a Ramen Shop

 Traveling Without a Plan

The routine on Friday's, around here, goes something like this.

Camera shooting partner, Doc Graff, usually shows up around 9AM.

We have no idea, where we will be going, until time to hit the road comes along.

Our main objective, is to get out of town. Anywhere, sounds good. Go have fun.

Tomb, King Sho Hashi

The burial place of Okinawa's First King, seemed like a good place to start the day.

We had been out searching for it about a month ago and, hiked right past it.

It was a  bit easier to locate today because Click Okinawa Dude, made a video about the place.

Watch his YouTube show if, you want to get an appreciation for the terrain.

The poor king and his family got kicked out of the castle and, his remains got booted, too.

His final resting place, wouldn't be with the other royalty on the castle grounds.

Friends and family mover his remains from Shuri to Yomitan and, buried him in the woods.

Visit Okinawa Hai! for all the directions and details about the Tomb.

Waitui, trail,road,cultural asset, Katsuren Peninsula

From the tomb, on the western side of the island, we headed over to the east coast.

We went looking for this cultural asset, called Waitui.

Those folks, in the picture, dug a trail through a mountain, by hand, finishing the job in 1932.

mountain, trail, road

Not very proficient at direction giving, I Geo-tagged the position.

It's located at:  N 26.31739700   E 127.88994700, for those who use GPS thingies.

ramen restaurant, counter, tables, tatami room

Thinking about all the hard work, everyone did, I needed a break from the hot sun.

So, we decided to try out a Ramen Shop, we had never been to before.

Whenever, you see a place like this, filled up at lunchtime, you know It's going to be good.

Sitting a table with, my legs stretched out one the floor was a bit challenging.

It looked like a wrestling match between, me, the table and the wall, as I was trying to get up.

The photo had to be taken, before my piping hot lunch, got cold.

Just smelling the food, had my mouth watering and, I was half-starved to death.

The pork dumplings, we call Gyoza, were delicious and, I put some hot sauce on mine.

Somehow, during the night before, they slipped something in my beer, that casued a hangover !

The fried rice was the best, I have ever eaten. And, all that food cost less than 7 bucks.

There was too much, for me, to finish it all. Now, I wish, I had packed the leftovers as a takeout.

For those, wondering where, I got this meal, check TripAdvisor's Review.

They'll even give you a map. I don't do directions. Remember ?

Flowers from Kijoka for the Ladies -- Men Stuck Eating Steaks

Day Two in the Iris Fields

A second trip this week had to be made to capture more purple beauties.

Map It Okinawa Dude and, I drove up north this morning under questionable skies.

iris, flowers,fields

Fortunately, the rain clouds blew by and we had sunshine as we reached Ogimi.

For today's trip, I brought along an additional, wide angle lens.

purple iris,flowers

When it comes to flower photography, I'm not too imaginative.

field, flowers, blossoms

What you get from me, is either bunches of flowers...

one iris flower

... or, I just single out one or two.

iris fields in bloom

Quick tours around the acres of land are made, snapping away on the shutter.

iris field, flowers, mountains

The purpose of my photography, is to make you want something.

It's supposed to make you wish, you could be here.

Imagine being here, sniffing all these fresh flowers and, snapping pictures, too.

Blue skies and sunshine. Yay !

Armloads of these flowers, freshly cut, were delivered to my special ladies, too.

A Working Man Needs Nourishment

restaurant, parking lot

Leaving the northern areas brought me here, for the second day in a row.

Road Station Kyoda  (道の駅」許田) is in Nago City, on the way home.

restaurant outside view

This is an establishment, I have stopped at many times.

And, never could figure out, why it is always so busy.

steak, onions, potatoes

Deciding to splurge, I ordered garlic steak.

soup and salad

Reasonably priced, it included rice, soup and salad.

At 1000 yen, that's just about 10 dollars; not bad.

Maybe, I'll do a TripAdvisor Review on this place.

Things I Never Knew About this Road Station

It was the first, the very first, Road Stand (Michi no Eki) to open, in Okinawa.

Tickets for travel attractions in northern areas, are sold at discounts here.

A lottery ticket stand, located here, is considered to be a good luck spot.

So many people have won with tickets purchased here, the word got around.

Over a billion and a half yen worth of prizes came from this lottery stand !

Thousands of fresh food items, souvenirs and trinkets are available, too.

The next time I drop in, I won't be buying any of that stuff.

Locally produced fruits and pottery are alright for some folks.

Lottery tickets, nah.  I don't gamble.

But, garlic steaks. Yum.  I'll be back again and, soon.

One Was Shot with a Cellular Phone

When I do a TripAdvisor Review, I like to send in a few photos.

Sometimes, especially when it's time for lunch, I leave the cameras behind.

There's a time for photography and there's a time for eating. I take both, seriously.

In no particular order, here are the latest review photos, loved by travel property folks:

Food Photo: Hamburger Steak at the Tulip (チューリップ) Restaurant

So Tasty I Had to Make a GIF out of It

Usually, on the night of the Full Moon, I like to post an astronomy photo.

The camera and tripod are on standby and, I keep going out to check the sky.

It might not peek through the clouds tonight so, you may have to settle for this food shot.

hambugreg steak, salad, steam rising, black background

What you see here, is a combination of 7 images.

There was a whole tray full of other items, that came along with the meal.

A bowl of steamed rice, miso soup and pickled radish were also included.

By the time, I got done fooling around with food photography, the main course was cold.

burning cigarette, ashtray, smoke

The lit cigarette, in an ashtray trick, was used to put some steam in the scene for viewing.

Then, I gobbled everything down and, ran back across the street to get back to work.

See more of the restaurant Tulip on my TripAdvisor Review.

If you ever get the chance to visit Kin Town, stop on by and maybe, we could do lunch !

NOTE:  The ratings and rankings listed above, are not mine.

They come from TripAdvisor travelers reviews.

Each time, I submit a review and photos, I must certify:

The photos were taken by me and, I am the owner.

And, I must certify, no payment or, discounts were received from the business.

In some cultures, bribery is an accepted form of doing business.

Well, I ain't that cultured, I guess.

If I ever get that way, I'll let TripAdvisor know.

And, quit reviewing for them.

Like, if I ever decide to write RyukyuMike's Bar and Grill Guides.....

SOMEBODY COULD PAY ME FOR THAT !

Did You Know McDonald's Has a McCafe in Okinawa ?

McDonald's outside view with blue sky

It looks like any other McDonald's from this side.

And, I'll be a sonovagun.  I didn't bring along a camera.

So, I took this snapshot with the handy, dandy cell-phone camera.

Now, the front of the building is a little different.

One of these days, I'll go back down there and shoot the whole place.

There's a big sign, out front, that says, McCafe.

And, when you get inside, they have a coffee counter that could put Starbucks out of business.

This place is down the road, just about six miles from my office.

It's in a town we used to call Ishikawa but, got renamed Uruma.

The place was so impressive, I did a TripAdvisor Review, as soon as I got back in my office.

They must have really liked what I said. Because it's already published.

See, I say stuff like, "Not that, I'm trying to loose my reputation, as a connoisseur, of fine dining."

And, they like to hear things like that so, they know you aren't taking bribes.

Or, do you suppose, they really liked that cell-phone photo ?

Photos Selected by TripAdvisor Property Owners in Okinawa

5 More RyukyuMike Photos Chosen

It's always nice to get an email from TripAdvisor telling you one of your photos was selected.

There's no money involved in it but, here's a little secret:

It drives people to your website.

A little drum roll and, here are the latest:

Kanna Thalasso, wide angle exterior view, Spa

Ranked #1 of 3 Restaurants in Ginoza-son, Okinawa:  Dugong

restaurant, interior, Nagomagai

#19 of 54 Restaurants in Nago:  Nagumagai

Onna-som Museum, displays

#11 of 14 attractions in Onna-son:  Onna-son Museum

museum displays

#4 of 5 attractions in Higashi-son: East Village Tateyama and Mizuno Seikatsu Museum

pond at entrance to Matsuda Cave

So new it hasn't been rated against the other 4 attractions, yet:

What's wrong with people, are they afraid to get their feet wet ?

Maybe, I should set-up a camera tour through the place and see if that draws a crowd.

Okinawa Photos Selected by TripAdvisor Property Owners

Ten More RyukyuMike Photos of Okinawa and One from New York

A great excuse to bring the cameras to lunch or, anywhere you travel, is TripAdvisor.

A few times a month, I've been known to do reviews for the outfit.

It's always a surprise when some property owner selects a photo to represent them.

The images are not something I'd enter in a contest but, somebody likes what they see.

That's proof, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess.

What's really neat about it is the exposure the photos get, around the globe.

There's no telling how many people read TripAdvisor each day.

But, I know, they do have "Over 100 million trusted traveler reviews and opinions."

Disclosure: TripAdvisor and these property owners don't pay me for reviews.

As an affiliate of TripAdvisor I receive a commission if you travel through my links to them.

Shucks, somebody has to pay for all the food I eat !
