Wildlife Photos: Buff-Backed Heron or Cattle Egret

The Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) has all sorts of common names.

They are called Elephant Birds,

Hippopotamus Egrets,

Rhinoceros Egrets, and, even...

...Buff-Backed Herons.

In Okinawa, Japan we just call them Amasagi.

We don't really have any elephants, hippos or rhinos running around here.

SMITHSONIAN MARINE STATION can tell you all you want to know about these birds.
