2015 Sanshin Day in Okinawa Japan

music, sanshin, 3-stringed instrument

The 4th of March We Celebrate this Instrument

People throughout the Ryukyu Islands will be singing and dancing while the sanshin are played.

Radio and TV stations will  broadcasting tunes featuring the three stringed instrument.

The largest gathering of sanshin enthusiasts will probably be in Yomitan.

A shrine dedicated to Akainko (father of Okinawan classical music) is there.

Some sanshin players visit, hoping it will boost their musical talents.

My visit will be to witness the events taking place at this special site.

Then, move on to the Yomitan Village Cultural Center.

There will be crowds, enjoying the twang of folk tunes being played there.
